Called to tell me my computer has a terrible virus. Said they were from Microsoft. I have a Mac.
Just got a call from this guy with a strong indian accent. Claimed to be from a Windows service center out of Toronto. Said my computer was automatically sending messages and plugging up the system and wants me to log on to my computer right away and he hill help me resolve the problem. This is a scam. Till him to go fly a kite and hangup.
Canada has a do not call list for call centers. Although these people DID get through we called a government complaint center. These people have been heavily fined twice but occasionally we do get calls still. Ask where they are calling from and a number where you can call them. Canada requires they provide both. They always hang up. If in Canada call 1-800- OCANADA to report. If in the US check to see if there is a complaint number. We do not get any other call center calls, only this one occasionally.
Got my 5th call just now from man with Indian accent saying there was a problem with my windows computer, I don't have a windows computer.I hung up and entered my number on Canada do not call list. Looks like they have started to include Canada in their scam.
I got a call from this number, I didn't recognize the number so I let it go to voice mail. The person who came on the line didn't seem to know that he was speaking to an answering machine as he kept saying hello several times before finally hanging up.
Sounds to me like the easiest -- & maybe the only -- solution for anyone who fell for this scam is to just drop the computer into the nearest body of water & forget about it. Oh, but then they should also contact any creditors, banks, etc, put out fraud alerts, etc. Seems to me that fixing the computer is the least of her problems. The moral of the story is: some people should just stay away from computers -- & from phones as well. Sorry, I don't want to sound mean, but I call it as I see it. Let me close with my perpetual mantra: "Don't pick up any call whose number you don't recognize!"
One should never answer in the first place any unknown numbers especially if the comes out weird on the display, after looking at this blog, I program it as spam, so anytime afterwards that is the way it comes up and then just ignore that issue. With some luck they will never call back here since no one ever ever answers.
