This number keeps calling me. I have called it back and it states "this number is not working" I do not know what is going on but I believe is may be a scam.
I received such a call on Thursday the 24th. She said my sister who lives in another part of the country authorized her to call me. Funny that out of 5 of us only 2 received such a call. This was supposed to regard the passing of our mother who struggled to get by every month. The calls also went to our cell numbers that we keep very private. I did not give my social security number but did verify my address. I will be cautious in any communication such as this.
Some say this is legit and others say it is a scam. I am on the fence so I am happy all I did was verify my DOB.
I just submitted an online application for social security benefits yesterday. This phone number is from Social Security Administration in Richmond, CA answering my questions that I typed in the remarks field. The caller identified themselves with their name, company and city. They left answers to my online questions on my voice recorder and requested that I call them back at 1-877-772-3794 at a specific extension with my selection of taking spousal benefit or my own social security benefit to proceed with my application. I believe this is a legitimate call.
I called Social Security after getting called from this number the day after I applied for SSI. It is legit. It was from the Western Region Service in Richmond, CA. Agents make these calls when they have questions about your application or need more information.
Have received 2 calls from this number, no vm. Return calls get msg "this is a non-working number"
Also need to mention that 1-877-772-3794 is a total scam number..."please stay on the line for a special offer"I do not believe the Social Security office provides 'special offers' LOL
From my experience this appears to be a legitimate number. The reason you cannot call back on it is because of the total lack of customer service in the SSA. If it became known that you could call this number and have a decent chance of actually talking to someone, the SSA in Richmond would be overwhelmed with calls. Instead they want you to call the 800-772-1213 number which often has an over 3 hour wait time. The post office does the same thing. Ever have a problem with mail delivery and tried to find the telephone number for your local post office? You won't. You will only find a national number in DC that is a waste of time. I haven't checked but I am sure the VA , IRS, and other mismanaged agencies are the same.
There have been 2 people calling from this number to my father who is in the process of getting his ss disability, they have been asking him for info and questions that ssa already has, unable to answer things that ssa knows, sounds fishy, so we called his ss lawyer and ssa and both said they have no idea who this is calling. One of the other numbers they called from, 800 880 2832 comes up as a san fransisco area art store?!?! Anyway. Lawyer said DO NOT give out ANY INFO to them. They seem to be specializing in ssa related info and could even be someone connected with the office, or someone who (since they've been doing this since at least 2008) has invested in 'bouncing' the number to mirror a legit ssa number. However, nobody has listed any fraud (that I know of) connected with these called on the online boards, so it MAY really be SSA. BUT don't take the chance. Sandy
