deceptive and disreputable business practices, yes, but possibly not fraudulent.they can make money by telemarketing for loans at sky-high rates, thanks to the banks who are charging 25% on credit card balances. and they sell/rent lists of "active" phone numbers to other tele-pests(tm) for further harassment.i'd still call them illegitimati, but they're staying out of reach of real law enforcement.

Same thing was a call on the phone while we were out but no message. We almost tried to contact them as a distant relative on the wifes side goes by the name McGee as well as we have a friend with the same last name. If not for the different area code we would not have noticed. I hope someone nails the A$% H$%^ that is causing this greef.

the callerid info is fake, and they're probably located offshore, somewhere in india or pakistan, using voice over ip for cheap (almost free) long distance calling.makes it hard to find them, and they're probably (just barely) legal, so there's not much to go after them for.i'd love to see stricter enforcement of telecommunications laws, which prohibit misrepresentation (spoofing) of a call's origins. the phone carriers could do it, technically, but there's no (financial) incentive.

The Do Not Call list, apparently, only applies to companies in Canada. Any international company can get the numbers from the list and call you.

I keep getting phone calls from this number and I want them to stop.

No company name shown by callerid. Probably an identify theft scam. The recording was an ambiguous "this is a call from the credit card service department" and "you may qualify for a lower rate" ... many people will assume that it is a call from their credit card company and naively hand over their personal information while "applying" for a lower rate card.
