They can keep trying to collect the debt. As long as there is no action on the debt, for example, you submit a $50 payment to shut them up, it has to come off your credit report in 7 years. If you do anything on this account, then the clock for 7 years starts over.
If creditors who bought old debt from your original creditor are reporting you to the credit bureus, then you simply need to dispute the debt. You can go on to each of the 3 credit bureaus websites and file a dispute stating you have no knowledge of the debt. Some will tell you that you need to send a letter to dispute but I don't think it is necessary. You might have to subscribe to experian with a free trial in order to generate a report to file a dispute on, just cancel the subscription before 7 days and you dont get charged. I think you can file a dispute with transunion and equifax without having to subscribe to anything.I would almost guarantee you that these debt collectors are not able to provide proof of your debt and it will be wiped off your credit report forever within 30 days. I went online a couple weeks ago to pay on a debt that I owe for medical bills...I actually had 4 accounts with a dr's collection agency and I was making payments on on account each month to get them paid down. I went to the website and noticed a phone number to call because there was no amount there. When I called the phone number, the company told me that the debt had been cancelled. I am still paying on one account...the other 2 are paid off. I'm just hoping that it doesn't come back to haunt me. I got a call from this very number tonight and because of so many scams going around out there, I don't answer any phone numbers that I don't know.
This company is unbelievable. They don't leave messages, they call my house phone and then they call my home phone. They like to pester people!
