call received from 804 area code left message asking me to return call to an (800) with long extension, they then started asking me to verify questions, but i was skeptical and asked how i knew they were capitol one. she told me to call the # on the back of my card, and i could not find a fraud department.
This has always been a shady banking institution. Even the legitimate bank regularly engages in predatory lending practices. NO legitimate bank will ask for a complete social security number regardless of what is being wriiten here. I should know, I am a loan officer at one of the largest banks in the U.S.
I believe this is just a scam. I don't even have a Capital One card. I think it's just another way of trying to get you to tell these scammers your SS#. If these credit card companies were really concerned about your business they'd do a better job of putting security measures into place that actually work. And if I'm correct, credit card companies usually don't make it their business to call you when they suspect fraud. They usually just lock your card account and then wait for you to find out that your card can't be used. That way you will be sure to call them. That's what happened to me when I went out of town once. I bought a lot of items in one place. And since it was out of state my cc company locked my account cause they suspected fraud. So when my wife went to use her spouse card in our home area she found out she couldn't. So she had to call customer service and find out why and get the account reopened.Lesson learned: if you're ever traveling outside of your current residential city, esp out of state, be sure to notify your cc company of where and when you'll be traveling. Or face your wife's wrath when she calls you. lol
I also got a "Freud" call from someone claiming to be Capital One, at the same number. It sounded WAY suspicious to me, so I called the number on the back of my card, who confirmed it was legit. Still seems very odd to me though.......
NOT legit! Credit card companies do not call you about suspicious activities on your card. They lock it down til you find out and call customer service to find out why. Always use the # on the back of your card to get in contact with customer service if you have any issues with your card.
They seemed to have branched into business letters. I received a letter stating someone may have opened an account in my name and to contact 800-239-7054. I did not call.
I was freaked out too at first but this is a ligitimate number. It's listed on their website. Just go to the capital one website and click contact us and then click credit cards. All of their numbers are listed and this one is under fraud protection.
I received 2 calls and a letter with this number. I called Cap One through the # listed on the website and was told there was no account open in my name. I gave her the 800 # listed on the letter and left in the phone messages and after looking it up, she said that number was not affiliated with Cap One. You said when you called they told you it was legit...what did they do about it?
It's legit, but they do everything possible to make it appear un-legit: fake-looking letterhead, foreign customer service agents you can barely understand (or maybe this makes it sound more legit), they ask for the last 4 of your SS#, which seems crazy--but it's legit. I gave the case number from the letter & they had the info. I also went to experian and saw that, in fact, someone had tried to open a Capital One cc in my name, over a few days, actually, so I'm glad I called the number right away and got it reported as fraud. Also filed a fraud report with the credit reporting agencies.
