Received a call from (800)427-9428 (I got this # through *69) the caller identified themselves as "customer protection" from capital one. They gave the name of someone I know as the cardholder, but that person has never lived here. I called the (800)955-7070 fraud dept number on the capital one website. They had no record of someone calling my number. They did however identify the calling number as the main fraud department and the call back number left (800)239-7054 as the number of a fraud specialist. Crystal from the fraud dept, to whom I was speaking, asked for my social security number to verify none was trying to open an account in my name. I told her I would not provide this. Anyone have any idea what is going on? Tomorrow I am handing this all over to the state's attorney.
This is NOT Capital One's fraud department. They're phishing for credit card numbers--do NOT give them your number if they call you. Instead, hang up, call the number on the back of your actual card, ask to be transferred to the fraud department and REPORT THEM. Fake reports on this site saying it is legit. THEY ARE LYING !!!!!!!!!!!!!
800-239-7054 IS A LEGIT FRAUD PHONE NUMBER for the Capital One Fraud Dept. Their main Fraud Dept number is 800-427-9428, but this is a LEGIT number too. I called Capital One Customer Service and the Main Fraud number and they ran the 800-239-7054 number in their system and it is a legit number. I also had someone commit credit card fraud and it was fixed via the 800-239-7054 number and reflected through the Customer Service number later on. You can trust the 800-239-7054 number. It's just a different dept of the Fraud Dept - a higher level.
Hi there. I received a call from the same nos 1-800-239-7054 and I had the same feeling regarding legit or not and the reason is that their customer service people are not upto our standard , was nervous and he said it was a delicate matter so needed to verify my info. I was not ready to give any numbers if he asked other than last 4 digits. Found out their call center is in san jose costa rica. Hence the accent and the nervousness probably due to lack of training. And the question was legit , did not ask for any personal data than necessary. Yes I was on the alert.Have to say capital one has been hiring cheap untrained labor. The last call I made to them directly I talked to the customer service rep and she did not know the meaning of "Expedite" my card, she had a latin american accent and was not very professional either. Service sucks in this economy!
I just got a very muffled message on my home phone at 7pm on a Friday from 1-800-427-9428 asking me to call 1-800-239-7054 and to reference a number (that they did not leave on the message), it sounded like they said it was a doctors office. If it's anything to do with Capital One, I was approved for a credit card 3 days ago, and already received a call from capital one on my cell phone asking me to verify that I received a message to let me know to expect my 'welcome package' in 7-10 business days. Is this security gone mad? Or has someone already stolen my info from a CC approval from only 3 days ago? - if so they need to vet their staff. I'm waiting to see if they call back.
My brother received three phone calls "Capital One Fraud Department" They left a message for me to call them @ 800-239-7054. I did recently apply for a capital one credit card last week and received an approval letter. I never gave my brother's telephone number! How did they get my brother's number and leave a message for me? We live in different states. I called today (feb 22) and a man in a foreign accent asked for my credit card number without asking any other questions. Doesn't seem legit but I called the number on my card and they verify the above number as legit
Freud called you? were you reaching out for your mother or something? It's spelled FRAUD you [***] clown
Same story as "fishie - 16 Oct 2008" above - paper letter with B/W logo. When I called using their customer service # direct from the web, they did verify that the 800-239-7054 was a legit fraud number. They offered me to fax the original letter to check it, I will do that.
If this is a scam, it's the most elaborate scam of the century. The recordings seemed to be exactly what one would expect when calling a large corporate call center. The rep on the other end knew that I gave her an incorrect email address when she was verifying my identity, and she clearly was verifying information that could only have been obtained from a ChoicePoint file or something beyond a typical credit report. She ended the call by telling me that she was unable to verify my id from the questions she was asking and told me I would have to appear in person at a bank to activate my credit card... strange, yes, but she clearly knew what information I did (and didn't) give Cap One in my application.
