i just got the same message - 2 days after i applied for a capital one credit card. i didn't even call back because the "account" they said i had suspicious activity on was a made up account that i dont have. report these fools.
Just got off the phone with Capital One fraud department, 800-239-7054 IS a valid number. They put a hold on my card prior to me even trying to activate it, this is a very strange way of doing things in my opinion but after SEVERAL calls to different Capital One numbers listed on the website and even the activation number I beleive that this is a valid number and NOT a scam.
my mom in another state received a call from this number after i applied for a card. i did not use her phone number on my app -- how did they get her phone number? now i am worried this is a scam and my credit will be ruined! I stupidly called back...did not give dob or soc or even city/state for addresses. woman told me info only a person who was looking at my app would know....so confused!
I received a voicemail from a man named Chris that said he was from the Capital One fraud protection department, and that I needed to call 800-239-7054 ASAP. I recently made changes on my account (last name, home address, new photo on card), but over a month ago, and I've used my card since then. I called the number on the back of my card, and after a lot of automated prompts and a representative that couldn't help me, I was passed on to a 'Senior Account Manager'. 20 minutes, some personal security questions, some additional verifications, and my account was cleared. I didn't have any fraud - they froze my account to verify my changes. They tell me my account is now cleared. She did not address the voicemail or the phone number, however. But, my account is clear and good - they were wanting to get a hold of me. Just always use the number on the back of your card, or verify on their website first. There is fraud out there, but sometimes they just want to check in and verify stuff with you too.
We received phone call from Cap One saying that someone out of the country had posted fraudulent charges to our account & said to give 800-239-7054 a call when the charges posted on our account online. I called that number & they sounded very unprofessional. Crystal asked for my full account number, dob, name & other info for verification. I didn't give my full account number. Then she transferred me to Fred who was in the fraud specialist dept. He kept asking me for all of the details on the fraudulent charges. Shouldn't he have already known the details?! He was very casual & said they would mail out a letter to complete the process. It sounded too fishy though.I immediately called the number on the back of my card to verify that phone number (800-239-7054) & they said it was legit. They are just extremely unprofessional!
I was wondering how many of you declined the "fraud protection" i wonder if this is a way to scare customers into buying into this stuff?
I, too, received a msg on my answering machine to return a call to 800-239-7054, which I did the following day. After I gave them the requested account no., dob and last 4 digits of SSA, I became suspicious. It all was so poorly handled. My husband looked up the phone number and came across this blog. After hanging up, I called the no. on the back of the card, and, after speaking with one rep., she transferred me to their fraud div. The person I spoke with there was amazingly unprofessional and unhelpful; HOWEVER, it was established that the first call was, indeed, legitimate.Bottom line is that the 800-239-7054 no. is valid call. It is just that, as another blogger put it, Capital One appears to do business in an extremely unprofessional fashion.
This is definitely not a legitimate number. I called Capital One and they looked up the number and did not have any record of it. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR ACCOUNT NUMBER
My parents (?) got a call from this number shortly after I applied for a capital one credit card. They told them it was because they detected suspicious activity, but when I called them back it was to verify that I was actually the one who applied for the card.Unprofessional sounding, yes. But not a fraud. They sent me this number in one of their emails. Also think about it.. There's been reports on this thread about this number for three years now with a bunch of people claiming to have reported it to the FBI. Well here it is, 3 years later, and the FBI hasn't shut it down yet. Wonder why? The FBI doesn't just sit on this kind of stuff for 3 years. Because it's legit.
Recieved a call from this number, claiming to be Capital One Fraud Protection. I had recently applied for a card and had also recently switched addresses. I wasn't asked for my SS number, only for the answer to security questions (issuing state for SS number and year of car I drive). Seemed legit and was over without any trouble.
