I just got a new phone three days ago, since then I've been getting four texts a day from the number 9999999999. The message is full of just question marks. I also have Virgin Mobile and am going to call in and report the issue. I think it is pretty obvious that the problem lies with Virgin Mobile and I'm surprised they haven't fixed it yet. DO NOT text or call back. The number is probably a scam or just a way to gain information like if your number is active.
Didn't answer call, but called operator and was told there is no such number, just what I suspected.
I researched it for my service provider in Canada.. the number is generated when someone sends a text message to your phone number from their computer OR through a messaging service provided by their service provider. In the case of 'honest' messages like from your garbage collection company or some other legitimate concern, they're updating everyone using a computer by addressing the computer text message to its subscribers via their contact phone numbers using the following format in the Email Send To box: ten digit phone number@msg.(their service provider)" eg (515)6241234@msg.verizon.comThere's no knowing who sent the message unless you recognize the sender by the text contents.
I just saw this number show up on my husband's call log 6 times and after reading these posts, decided to look on my own call log. 5 of the 6 times this number showed up was when I called my husband. Can't tell you how thankful I am that I decided to check my own call log before confronting him with unwarranted accusations.
P.S. My number was also not being blocked when I called him so I don't know why it's showing up as the 999 #.
I've gotten a call from this number twice in the past two days. I did not pick up and they left no voicemail.
Sadly here is how it works as best as I can figure; My husband had an affair. I discovered it. He apologized and said he ended it. we were working on getting better. I blocked her number (with his knowledge) Still as account manager of our Verizon account I checked his story out on billing statements. Started to notice a lot of "unavailable" and (999-999-9999) numbers showing up. I confronted him. He admitted that she was the "contact" and apologized again. Reasserted his wish to reconcile. Now there are many unusual voicemail calls from him 2-4 minutes long. I think what is happening is she is either dialing *67 + his # (this is a one time caller ID block) Verizon then ignores the fact that she has been blocked from his line for her "privacy reasons" the call goes through as long as he doesn't answer it and lets it go to voice. He then replies in the same manner allowing his call to go to voice. The only thing that shows up on the bill is the voicemail #. I can't prove it but my gut tells me I'm right. Since I know for a fact that she got through while she was blocked by hiding her # with *67 (per call use)..... also *82 does the same thing except it can be made permanent for a specific #.
