They never ask for your full SSN, just the last 4 digits. That's not enough to do anything illegal. This is a legitimate phone number, confirmed with BoA.
i really dont get how like 50 people can all call the number on the back of their card and half of them get replies that it isnt a BOA number and the other half get a person saying that it is BOA number and that they know they contacted you. if this "scam" has half the customer service working for them telling people that the numbers ok then damn their good haha
I just received a call from this phone number. I did not pick up but googled the phone number and found that it was a caller identifying themselves as a Bank of America secutiry call.
Not scam!! Jerks tried to use my debit card 3x, but BofA declined. I have text alerts, & BofA tx me @3am & sent email to ask if I tried to use my card online for bogus purchases...when i tx back 'no' this # called me to verify acct. Your account is locked until you talk to them! Add text alerts if u don't alrdy have!
The number is not in their records because they're not looking in the right place. This is contracted through a 3rd party company most likely, but is completely a legitimate number. They let me know the last 4 digits of my credit card and several transactions on my account. If someone malicious had that information, they wouldn't need to be calling me up for 4 digits out of my SSN, would they? Use a little common sense people!
I rec'd 7 calls today from this number. I don't have an acct at BOA and never have. I didn't answer the call.
I also got a call from this number on 5/04/2015 with no message then a call on 5/08/15 - this time I answered and it was a recording saying there were some issues with my debit card (did not mention which acct) and if I hadn't received a new one yet to call another number. If it was real they would have left a message 4 days before and also had a human call not a recording. These may be legit Bank of America numbers but somehow fraudulent people can have it show up as the number they are calling from when it is actually not. I have 5 accounts with Bank of America and there are no issues with any of them.
It's a legit call from BoA's (poorly-designed) fraud-sniffing automated computer program/system.I tried to make a bank-based-ATM withdrawal for $60 at 9am one morning while I was out of town, after making a $300 withdrawal at the very same ATM late the previous night (which it properly dispensed). BoA denied the 9am transaction and put a hold on my debit card. By noon, just three hours later, I had a received a call from THIS telephone number (which left an automated voicemail regarding the situation. The message directs you to another automated number which tries to grill you about who you are and your recent transactions). I called the known/official BoA number, got thrown to one of those Indian call centers, spent 15 minutes answering silly questions, after which the hold was removed. The banks, especially Citi and BoA, are just getting downright dopey about this sort of stuff. Virtually any physical charge/withdrawal I make while out of town over $100 - bought a tv in a store down the road four hours from here, withdrew cash on a Vegas trip, whatever - automatically results in 'the third degree,' rejected transactions and/or card freezes that take no less than an hour to resolve. That despite any activity on file that would suggest no cause for alarm. In this case, I had just used my BoA CREDIT card to close my folio at the hotel. Then I turned right around and used my BoA credit card to make the withdrawal just denied on my debit card. In Vegas, same thing, in fact I had also physically appeared at a BoA teller window with passport & driver's license ID to make a cash withdrawal less than 24 hours earlier. All excellent reasons to know I am actually in those towns and spending MY money. All this nonsense proves to me is that the banks are all but totally incompetent at telling the difference between actual fraud and legitimate account activity. So anyway don't be real surprised if you get a call from this BoA number, even if you think there's no good reason why you should. There would be no way for a scammer/phisher to know my phone number and call it just after the transaction was denied. Still, it's right to be suspicous of this type of call - unless you have good reason to suspect that the bank's sniffer HAS been triggered (rightly or wrongly) by something. If it makes you feel better, just call BoA direct. You'll eventually get routed to a live person who'll ask you the same silly stuff and clear your account flag.
I just got a call from this number. Looked it up in google, came to this website and read through the comments. Decided to call them back at the 866 number they left me and entered the code they left on the voicemail. Got through to Bank Of America. They did not ask for any identifying information from me other than confirming my name. Then they listed the last 3 charges on my bank card and asked if I was aware of those charges. I confirmed that they were legit. The charges were indeed unusual for me as they were 3 online purchases within a single day, one of which was a company in the UK. When I confirmed that they were legit, they said they'll remove the hold on my card, and that was it.So it was legit.
