I received a call from 520-798-4152 this evening. I didn't recognize the number, so I didn't answer it. A man left a message that it was the Census Bureau & left an 888 number to call back & a case number. I did *try* to call the 888 number, waited on hold for over 22 minutes, got tired of waiting so I hung up.
i have also had calls from the same number, I refused to answer any questions and the same lady with horrible English actually got rude with me, and hung up on me. That I would have to say is not a Census Worker. I think it is a total scam as well.
Hello Folks,It might interest you to know that I used to work at this particular office of the census bureau. This is a legitimate number and can be verified by calling the 888 #. Like it has already been mentioned, the census conducts many different surveys other than the decennial census. Some are voluntary and some are mandatory. The best thing to do is ask this up front. Also, for every survey they MUST verify the address and or phone number to proceed, and there is always a chance that they have gotten it wrong. So before you break into a sweat about completion of the survey, see if they are really looking for you or not. Also, many of them take a total of 5 mins to complete. Not only does completing the survey ensure accurate apportionment of tax dollars, it also really helps out the nice people who work there are just trying to do their job and make a living like the rest of us. Avoid scams, always ask for methods of verification. Every form the U.S. government sends out must have a verifiable OMB number and a published telephone number. Almost all surveys can be done anonymously, so if you don't feel comfortable giving your name, just ask.Hope this helps!
I completed the 28-page survey and they confirmed they received it, so why would they need to call? To get my SSN or credit card number? They are not handling this well. Until they do this right, people are going to assume it's caller ID spoofing. If they want to contact me on how to set this up correctly, they are free to do so.
I called the US Census Bureau (the real phone number on the site) and they confirmed that my case number was real and that they wanted my correct address. The one they had on file was incorrect. I can only assume that in the previous census my phone number belonged to someone that lived at that address. My advice is ignore the first call and just call the Census Bureau directly to figure out what's going on. Use your case number if they leave it in a voicemail.
