I am with AT&T, but I have never tried using *60 to block calls. I just had *way* too many spammer/scammer calls to use the "feature" that is available through my phone service (of course, a limited number of "blocks" for an additional monthly fee, as well). Instead, I bought a call-blocking device that blocks spoofed numbers. In my case (I know this "solution" will not work for others.), I found that the call-blocking device works best by just "white-listing" the numbers of people I want to call me and then I let the device black-list (i.e., block) all other calls.
Derek T. That is the most hilarious thing I've heard :) Sounds like a Hollywood (or should I say Bollywood) sitcom. Gotta get it recorded next time. Good luck.
60 Questions: Thanks. My problem is that I run a business out of my home so I cannot 'white list'. Are there no devices that can detect computer software generated calls? That does not sound like rocket science. So appreciated your advice.
It is my understanding that, even though the phone companies have the ability to detect spoofed numbers, they currently do not pass any information along to the called party that could be used to identify any given number as one that has been spoofed. There are certain software solutions that might help you reduce the number of calls you receive. For example, there is a free service called nomorobo that blocks numbers identified by people who are using this service, but it is not available for all carriers.
If you hang up the computer is programmed to try again. The software gives them a couple of hundred lines. The best way is to pick up, put call on mute and leave the receiver off until THEY hang up. It will tell their computer program that the hang up came from their end not yours. Ties up their lines. They don't know whether or not they reached a live line. And most importantly they don't get to talk to a person. It's a pain but eventually they get the message. My suggestion if they are persistent. Good luck.
I try to play along with the callers. Usually they hang up.. I answer and then say.. oops can you hold on a sec. I put them on speaker phone and continue to make dinner usually or something like that. I did that with this person cus they called at dinner and I never said anything rude. I waited about 5 minutes and hung up. He called back and said hey you f ing bit%$ , why did you hang up on me? I said pardon me... then he went on for about 5 minutes telling me to do sexual things to myself and I actually thought I could scare him back saying I am recording this and sending it to the police. He said I am going to call you every blanking day and about 10 times everyday to tell you those things all over again. I hang up.. He called me phone number 3 more times not leaving a message or saying anything. He has not called back.
I update my "do not call" list every 3 months, so why am I still getting calls from these idiots? Call block works fine, but they still call after 9 pm. GRRRRR!
