This is a real number for the IRS. I just got called and she left a msg to. call back. I do have business with them other than owing money
The number in fact serves the IRS. I can tell you without a doubt that the IRS will call you if there is official business. The individual calling you should offer their badge number and where they are located and the purpose of their call. If this is not given at the front of the call, that may be a clue that it is less than genuine. Ask the individual for this information; there should be no resistance from the caller in the interest of "transparency".The number you are referring to serves the Phoenix metro area (perhaps other areas as well, but Phoenix I know for sure); these calls are routed through Ogden, Utah (which happens to host a fairly large IRS facility).Hope this helps.
I've had the IRS call me on several matters before without recent correspondence on a matter. Your post is incorrect.
The reason they are giving you a different number to call is that when they call you, the call is being routed through their call center in Ogden, UTAH. They may be in Phoenix, and will leave a message with a 602 area code. You got a call from the Fresno office (area code 559) - and yes, the IRS have a very large office in Fresno, CA. If you decide to call back, ask them to verify their identity - badge number, location, purpose of their call, etc. You should not get ANY push back from the agent whatsoever. Not a SCAM.
This is a legitimate # used by the IRS. I have an adjuster who is working with our account at the Sacramento, CA office. Whenever he calls me, this number shows up.
This is a scam. This lady calls me telling me she's with the IRS and needs to "discuss what's going on". I call back. She answers "ACS" and asks for my social. When I refused my social she got flustered and then asked for my name. I spelled out my first and last name for her. She asked "what's your state" so I told her what state I live in. She then brings up 3-5 addresses, none of which are mine. She spells out what "state" I live in and it sounded like she spelled Perusia. Pretty sure if this was legit IRS she'd know Perusia isn't a state. And if it were IRS they'd easily be able to pull up all my info with my name without my social. Scam!
Just a "P.S." - they will call you. Based on the information left on your return either by you or your accountant. This is typically more common at the Large Business and International (LB & I) or Small Business-Self Employed (SBSE) level. Don't be surprised by a call simply to verify information relevant to your return for a specific tax year - chances are you are being randomly audited.
This number is from Ogden UT but it is not the IRS. They get phone numbers of taxpayers who have tax liens, levies, and IRS tax debt. This is a SCAM.
Better to call your nearest or local IRS Office to check for validity in this day and age of phone scams. Never give information to anyone over the phone schedule a face to face meeting with an agent to clarify information
YOU made the first contact with them so YOU initiated the call & they returned your call. They will NEVER make first contact via phone, social media, etc. It will be in writing. My fiancé works for the IRS & if he calls me from his desk phone the number that comes up is this very one, but his office is in another state. If you have not called the IRS asking them to call you back, you can bet this is a scam.
