So this number WILL come up in caller ID when various agents of the IRS are calling. It's what shows up when the guy I am currently dealing with in Los Angeles calls (I then have to call him back on his local line if I miss his call). That being said, it is very easy (though illegal) to spoof a phone number and certainly someone trying to pose as the IRS will likely be aware of this particular number. As the IRS link that others have posted indicates, the IRS is NOT going to call you out of the blue trying to collect money from you. Indeed, if for some reason, you suspect the IRS might want to talk to you, just find a local office and contact them directly. NEVER give any personal or payment info over the phone to someone claiming to be from the IRS; they do not operate that way. And despite what you may have heard, they are not going to play hardball and threaten average taxpayers - they save that for people they are fairly sure of committing major fraud or tax evasion. It won't be done over the phone but in their offices or in a courtroom. For example, all I am dealing with is a fairly basic audit of specific items (and the IRS agent is really professional and quite a pleasant guy really) and nothing to do with owed taxes (well, assuming he's ultimately satisfied with my documentation). And I am meeting and dealing with him locally despite the UT caller ID.
Update to my previous post: 801-605-1816 is definitely a scam artist phishing for personal information. I read a post on another site earlier today stating that the person who called claimed to be an IRS representative. THIS IS A SCAM! The IRS does not call you unless you contact them by telephone FIRST. If you owe the IRS money or are delinquent in filing your returns, the IRS will send you a letter--they will not call. I got another hang up call (no message left) from this number less than 12 hours ago, which makes at least four calls this month from 801-605-1816. If you get a call from this number, do not answer--IT'S A SCAM designed to trick people into revealing their personal information!
It's definitely a valid IRS call-- they just use this number to disguise the caller's actual number. And it could be coming from different parts of the country, not Utah.
Received a call asking me to return call to a local number 559-459-5473, a Mrs. Guttierrez telling me they are calling about a form I sent to their office and they have a question about my form. However, they identify they will be in the office until 3:00 p.m. Pacific time. Interesting if they are in the same time zone as me? I have not sent any forms and they did not identify what kind of form.
Just rec'd a voice mail from this number. I initiated a call to IRS this morning, our case is in appeals. The person calling from this number was from the IRS, and the info that he left on my vm matched a recent IRS letter received. Legitimate call.
(801) 605-1816 this number is a SCAM. Some one called my phone left a message saying calling from IRS, gave a different number to call at the end of the day. The above posting is TRUE that IRS does not call your number they issue a letter to address on file.
This number iIS an IRS line. I know someone that works for the IRS and they just called me from this number.
My wife actually works for the IRS and this is the number that shows up on my cell phone when she forgets her cell phone and calls me from the office phone. Mystery Solved.
