I received a call at my workplace from this number. The caller claimed to be with the IRS. She wanted phone numbers of people not associated with the information she wanted to acquire and when offered an email for one of the people she wanted to talk to she said she couldn't email. And she was not interested in calling the large corporation I told her she needed to talk to regarding the information she was wanting. She did not identify herself until I repeatedly asked her what her name was and which company she was with. When I Googled the call-back number she gave me, it was registered to a person in California. The number she called from (thank you caller-ID) brought me to this website and a few others supporting the scam theory.
This is absolutely the IRS. Is there a chance it could be "spoofed?" Yes of course. Is it likley? No. What's more likely is that you are trying to pretend you don't have a problem and they should not be calling you.I received a call from this number but didn't answer. No message left. Called the number and received the recording saying to "call the IRS at the number listed on the form or correspondance". This is an OUTGOING number only. The IRS changed their outgoing system some time ago so that instead of showing "unknown" it now shows the number of the center the call originated. Utah being one. If they called you you probably owe money or someone at that number does. Stop pretending it's a "scam" just because you want to get even with the IRS for money problems you caused on your own.
that you can make us believe your attempt to steal money from honest hard working Americans is real. Stop deceiving yourself that your justification for being a criminal comes from some poor childhood or other excuse when the fact is that it is you and you alone who chose this life of crime. Stop deceiving yourself that you are more than a scumbag, lowlife, who deserves to waste the space on this planet that could be used for someone who contributes to society. Stop deceiving yourself that you should be allowed to continue breathing air and eating food that could be used for someone useful.
Just ignored the call - legit IRS agent left voicemail who had stopped by my business previous week. What is confusing is I am in San Diego and the number I had originally called and the number the agent told me to call back in the VM was a San Diego number but the phone number that showed was from Ogden Utah. So for what its worth - in my case - call was fully legit.
This is a legitimate IRS number. I got a call from an IRS examiner I am working with on a client audit through this number, and he left me his local number to respond. I did not pick up the call because caller ID had the 801 area code and ID'd as "unavailable". As it turned out it was a valid call.
I have no idea why I am getting downvoted. If you're leery about the number being a scammer, then call the main IRS line from their website instead of this number. But trust me, the IRS is trying to get a hold of you. Bury your head in the sand if you want. Hopefully someone filled out a form with typo and your number is listed by mistake. But it IS associated with the IRS. Why not be an adult and call the main IRS number to see if you have a balance you don't know about? Better than finding out about a Lien later when you go to get a loan.
Yes, you are correct. Certain IRS divisions do call. For example, telephone method is the preferred contact method for revenue agents working out of the Small Business/Self Employed division. The applicable section of the the internal revenue manual is posted below. I also received a call from 801-605-1816 & did not answer becasue I did not recognize the number. The number belonged to a fellow IRS co-worker. He called me from his desk; the call was routed through our new phone system & shows up as the 801 #.4.10.2.7.3.1 (01-17-2012)Field Examination Initial Contact(1) Field examination cases should be scheduled using telephone contact when ever possible. The advantages of using a telephone contact to schedule field examination cases are:It allows examiners to schedule the initial appointment at an appropriate time, which is agreeable to the taxpayer and reduce the number of rescheduled appointments. It allows the examiner to explain to the taxpayer what records should be available for the examination. Under no circumstances should the telephone conversation be used to verify items appearing on an income tax return; inspection of records or other data can not be made by telephone. But, if the taxpayer volunteers information during this initial contact concerning audit issues, the examiner should document the discussion.
