Its actually the IRS. I just started working for them and submitted my paperwork for Health Benefits, and The gentleman was calling to get clarification on my seasonal status. Not any personal info was asked for... Just basic general information.
I received a call from (801) 605-1816at 5:01 p.m. on a weekday. There was no message or voicemail left, and when I called the number back, an automated message claimed the number to be from the IRS and to call the number left in my message. I did a Google search on the number and found reports of scam.I called the IRS this morning and they confirmed that unless you are working with a case worker, the IRS WILL NOT CALL YOU. The employee checked my account and confirmed that there was no history or note made that I was given a call from the IRS. He cautioned about several scans taking place and that the IRS will never ask for your information or request a payment to be made over the phone. So no, this is not a legit IRS number. The IRS will contact you via courier. Please be cautious.
I received a call from 801-605-1816 but it was a legitimate response by an IRS official to a message I left them, based upon a different number I called within a mailed correspondence I received from the IRS. I'm doing an "Offer in Compromise" and this call (and number) was indeed a bona fide response to my message I left asking them to call me back. PS- they never asked for my social, etc., only for the case number on the original letter they sent me. Hope this helps.
This IS the IRS. I have been working with an IRS agent for months to resolve a matter I contacted them about. Sometimes when he calls me it is routed through this number even though I am 30 minutes away from the IRS center where he works in California. IRS agents will always be friendly and courteous so feel free to ask for information to verify. I'm not saying that phishing scams aren't somehow masking behind this number, but my agent calls from it and leaves messages and tells me which form he is faxing and I fill it out and fax it back, etc. If you are nervous, understandably so, don't give out personal information over the phone, but I would not simply ignore the call in case you do have an urgent matter you do not know about.
Received a call this morning from 801 605 1816. They left an almost comprehensible lengthy voicemail and a more clear number to return call of 559 459 6677, which is listed as a land line in Fresno 93721.This is strange considering I currently have dealings with the IRS, but I do not trust these bozos. I’m blocking the 801 number.
There were too many coincidences here for me to be comfortable. Upon reinvestigation I discovered this was someone @ the IRS office in Fresno trying to reach me, and the call was completely valid. Hard to know for sure these days; there are so many quacks in the world that I feel that I am in a flock of ducks sometimes ... I guess this goes to show we need to investigate first before jumping to conclusions ...
