Caller ID is useless. Just because it matches a legit IRS number doesn't make the callers legit. I can spoof any number and make the caller id say anything. If they haven't contacted you by mail first, assume it is a scam
Hey, guys and gals, unless it is spoofed, this is a number used for outgoing calls by the IRS's Taxpayer Advocate Service. We've had a knotty problem about incorrect backup withholding, which after many travails and much internal confusion on the IRS's part has finally (we think and hope) gotten resolved. Today an IRS employee called from this number to confirm, didn't try to scam us or anything else. It's good to be suspicious, but sometimes they really are from the government and they really are there to help.
I too can verify that the call I just received at this number was a return call to me from an IRS agent I left a voice mail for a few hours ago. It comes up as unavailable, but it was the actual lady I was looking for and have spoken to in the past (though her incoming number last was different than this one). I suppose it depends what office they are in at the time they return the call.
My husband's ex-wife works for the IRS in Modesto, CA. She called our home from this number (801) 605-1816 this evening to check how my 17 year old stepson was and if we were having tornados. This is a Utah #, I assume she chose it because she knew I would answer, I'm from Utah. Be aware, Her name is Sandra Ellen O'Dell. Watch out, she's vindictive.
This is a real IRS number used by the Ogden, Utah campus as a general number as so that a large portion of the US does not have our desk phone numbers. The although IRS DOES use correspondence as or main communication with taxpayers, we also call to gather further information while working cases or if the taxpayer has requested a response. Sometimes it is easier to explain situations over the phone instead of sending a general form letter requesting information. Truth be told it is more cost effective to call rather than correspond. If in doubt, call the IRS customer service hotline to verify the call is legitimate.
I have question, if it is not too much trouble. I received a IRS letter contain about 20 pages. On the letter, it has a contact person Jimin Wang and contact number is (626) 927-1453 and employee identification number is 0676855. However when I looked up, the phone number is not a local IRS office number. Then later on I received a phone call claim to be the same person on the letter. She asked me to go to local IRS office and take my bank statement. I am just wondering if there is any way for me to identify the authenticity of this phone call.
Hi! I seriously doubt they are -- because this week I got another scam call from Ogden UT (different number but still thought it weird from Ogden again)so i think more likely than not, it's something shady.Don't freak out.
I've received at least three calls from this number over the past month on my home phone. The number shows registered to a Justin Harold Terry on Collins Blvd in Ogden, UT, but it's possible that the number has been spoofed. Since whoever calls never leaves a message, I suspect it's a phishing operation trying to scam people into revealing their personal info. If you're a legitimate caller then leave a message! I hardly ever answer my home phone anymore because of calls like these.Protect yourself against scammers and get an answering machine or voice mail.
