This number 801-605-1816 and 559-498-6618 is in fact an IRS agent in the collection department. I had applied for an installment agreement when I filed my taxes in April. She was calling to set up my installment plan for repaying my tax bill, and prior to her calling, I had received the letter saying they received my application for the installment agreement. I'm glad I didn't ignore this because otherwise the next steps if I didn't get this taken care of was a tax lien, freezing bank account, garnishing wages, etc. She said the number comes up with the 801 area code, even though their office is based out of CA. If it wasn't for the fact she was aware of my prior tax years and how much my prior installment agreement was, I might have been hesitant. Answer the call or call them back, they will only try to call you twice then move to next steps.
I JUST received a call from the referenced phone number. It is legit! I submitted a letter to the IRS and the voice message that the person left made a reference to my letter.
First a lady claiming IRS rep left message; returned the call; spoke with a David and when I pressed for details he said it aS a wrong number. Would like to file a complaint with the IRS but don't know where to call.
It is the Ogden Business Unit for the IRS, which also processes 8288B for reduced foreign withholding (FIRPTA). They should leave a message with a call back number if you miss the call and taxpayer information, because they stopped allowing people to call back this number about a year ago. However, from my experience, they would only be calling the tax attorney or CPA that has POA on file or submitted with filing. For the taxpayer, they would send a letter, not call. However, note, that numbers can be spoofed, so be aware of what the person is asking for and not phishing. They will give you the information about which client they are calling about and they would have your POA. Because they are not calling the taxpayer, the taxpayer would not be supplying personal information to identify or proving themselves as the correct taxpayer.
While someone may spoof this number, it IS an IRS number. Local IRS agents you may be dealing with get routed through this number. I know, I am dealing with someone and they told me in advance they would call and this number, not their direct number, would show up. That individual even left a message for me once and it showed up as this number. The IRS does not call you directly UNLESS you have called them prior. If you had contacted them, this was your call back.
CWG40, you are clueless. Stop spewing nonsense when you clearly don't know what you are talking about.
IRS employee is correct. CWG40 is misguided. I have dealt with IRS and the local agent warned me it would be routed through this number vs her direct, local line. It was.
This 1816 numbers calls but never a message is left. I will wait message retrieve before I answer.
Caller claiming to be IRS, as reported by others. Also left a 559 number. Reported to FCC and FBI Internet Fraud division.
