i received a call from this #801 605 1816 she said her name was Mrs Sterling from the IRS, and I need to call her back within 24hrs from 8/01/2014 @3:47pm central time. I tried calling the number back at 4:30 8/01/14, the recording stated that if you are trying to reach some from the IRS please refer to the correspondence and call that number,but there was no number in the message she left nor did she leave me a number the only number I have us the #she call me from, it also state that If IRS Representative will make several attempt to reach you, but I have yet to receive a call since then and I have answered my phone everytime it rang.

This is indeed the IRS. I've been working with an Advocate, and by the way they are there to help you. She is in Phoenix, I have her direct number but when she calls me this number appears on caller ID.

Also, I call people regularly in the course of my work. - - The scam is someone calling saying they are from the IRS and threatening various actions, if you do not send a payment immediately. The scammers ask you to get debt or cash cards and call them back with the numbers. - - When I call, at least for the first time, I'm never asking for money.

Okay, this IS a legitimate IRS number. If you've had any contact with the IRS previously regarding anything, anyone in the Western US calling back to you will call out from this number.HOWEVER.Technology DOES exist to allow people to spoof numbers. So, if you get a call from this number, make sure of a few things:1. This person tells you clearly who they are and give you an identification number. You can request some time to go make sure they are who they are (you can see how to do that from the IRS.gov website). They'll give you a callback number.2. They are not asking for any personal information. The IRS will not request PIN numbers or SS#'s out of you. If someone asks you for that information, hang up and report them immediately.3. A call from this number is more likely to happen if you've been in recent contact with the IRS, whether it's mailing a form or speaking to an agent/revenue officer/etc. If you have absolutely no contact with the IRS and are up to date on all your taxes, I would also report for suspicious activity.So in short, yes, it is a legitimate number, but remember that it can be spoofed. Make sure the situation and what the person is telling you makes sense, and remember to never give out sensitive information over the phone.
