They must be a real batch of geniuses there. I got two calls from this number today (Sunday, no less) on my Google Voice number. It has long since been marked aas spam, which means the call never goes through and all they would hear is a recording stating the number has been disconnected. I make the assumption they don't bother to listen and just plug in numbers they have on record at random intervals.
Exactly Geoff. Because someone has a old bank or retail credit card information doesn't mean they own the debt. It would be like me making a official document up on my home pc and sending it to you stating you owe me money because you have a VISA card which I happened to find the basic acct information in the trash or online somewhere. You don't owe me squat but maybe I can fool some saps into paying something? Its a scam while what I point out would be illegal for me to do its somehow acceptable and sanctioned to allow this scam through lack of government intervention and kissing [***] to lobbyist. As well when you send for validation make sure that they explain the exact amount they claim you owe and how they calulated later charges and interest, not just the total amount but they must explain how the charges are calculated. These guys are crooked as hell. The people calling are helpless suckers that might be working at Wal-Mart or Burger King next month in their little cubicles. The crooks are at the top.
They kept calling after I've told them this is my new WORK number and continuously interrupting my work day! They've called from 859-586-9557, 713-966-6357, 678-275-8928, 914-595-7031, 404-719-4368, 412-235-6111... every day!!
I keep getting calls from this company and don't know who they are or what they want! They need to leave me alone!
Very true Golden Girl. Best not to answer the phone at all. One of their favorite tricks that works is acting like they can't pronounce a persons last name they are looking for, so they say it incorrectly . Usually the person on the other end corrects them with the proper way to say the name and bingo! They know they have the persons correct address or the person they are talking to knows who ever they are searching out to harass. Say nothing don't answer best course of action.
PortFoolLio buys old (past my state's statutes of limitations) debts for pennies on the dollar. Here is the information I used to send them a cease & desist letter: Portfolio Recovery Associates PO Box 12914 Norwalk, VA 23541-1223 800-772-1413 portfolio recovery.com
They are hired by Target to collect illegal so-called debts on old credit cards. The Target scam was to offer a credit card, never mail it and accuse you of not paying for purchases (on a card that was never received). They've done this to me and 3 other people I know. This stems back to debts from the 1990s which are no longer legally collectable even if they were legit. Target and Portfolio are both pure garbage perpetuating a scam. The best thing to do here is to ignore them and block their calls (from numerous numbers & growing). They are nothing but scammers trying to collect illegal money from innocent victims. Too bad laws aren't enforced to stop their illicit practices.
Cate this isn't unique to PRA in regards to the USPS not deploying a single employee to stand around for hours for mailers/customers who have a large volume of signature mail. For instance most large mailers have PO pickup, a PO box, or a mail room at their office. A postal employee is not going to stand their waiting for 2,000 pieces of certified mail to be signed for every day on top of express, and registered mail. In my example I will use the NRA or Fannie Mae who both receive copious amounts of return receipt mail daily, Mondays are even worse . But this is not some hush hush deal with these scum bags at PRA. You are correct on the rest. Any numbered signature required mail is called a accountable. This mail is handled separately from normal first class non signature required mails. Accountable mails is separated from other classes of mail from posting to delivery. A numbered piece of mail is registered by all handling employees and can be tracked rather the green cards are returned or not.
