Christina, I understand your frustrations. It is best NOT to answer calls from numbers you don't recognize.Let your answering machine or voice mail screen those calls for you. Don't worry about messages, the telemarketers/scammers don't leave messages for the simply reason that their calls are not important. I can expect you would hear from a jerk on the other end of a phone number that comes up as 222-555-7777. I say 99% chance that number was spoofed.. I hope you didn't give him a million dollars. :-) Serioulsy, these fraudsters do not care about the "do not call list" or the laws in any country. They are mostly after your personal information and/or credit card information. Solution: Call Blocking or Call Rejection features from your phone service provider. Calling features available from your current phone service provider may help you to reject a list of callers, offer you call forwarding options to forward these calls to another number. Example: Google Voice. Google Voice does a great job of screening, blocking, and routing calls. Best of all, Google Voice is FREE and you get your own telephone number. When you block a number on Google Voice the other party will hear the standard SIT tone along with a message that the number has been disconnected. I hope this helps you and others.
Got a call from (222) 555-7777 -- no one spoke. I waited a minute and hung up.Time of call, approx 10:15 PST, 1/21/12We have already had 3 apparently unrelated "fishing" calls this AM!
If i were you, I would do the following with telemarketers that are practically stalking you:Get a tape recorder hooked up to your phone and record the conversation---don't give yourself away----take the tape to the fraud department of your local police station.Answer the phone with "9-1-1 emergency?"That's what I'm going to do the next time I receive a call from the duct cleaning company that calls us....then i'm telling them I know police detectives from the US and Canada and i'll tell them to confiscate the computers and the phones. Have fun lolChristina
Since I posted on the 14. January.2012, I have not gotten a single call from these guys. I really urge folks to try the 1) my malware is fine, and 2) "explain why Microsoft isn't handling this themselves" question and keep on asking until they hang up on you. You won't hear from them again. (I had heard from them several times a day for several days and after finally answering the call and frustrating whoever it was, have not received one more call!) It's not as quick as, "I don't have a computer," but ut su a bit more satisfying if you have been hassled.
Received several calls from this number today. Most of the time there was nobody there, but this time there was. Sounded like an Indian accent (but I can't be sure). She told me that my computer has downloaded something harmful and that it is broadcasting my information over the internet. I kindly asked for her to verify my IP address with me before I would continue this call. She said she would, but first I must do what she wants me to. I refused to continue this call until she verified my IP address and we kept going in the same circle until finally I asked for a supervisor. At that time she said "there was no supervisor available" and that I am not to command her to do anything. I replied with "you called me, and until you can verify to me (with my IP address) that my computer is indeed compromised I will not continue this call", she started to tell me that I am not to "command" her again at which point I hung up the phone. This is a new number they are calling from. Previously it was 1-999-910-0103Play it smart people, this is a scam, either send them in circles, hang up the phone immediately, or just don't pick it up.
I just got off the phone from this very pushy man with an Indian accent who told me that people in my area were reporting problems with their computers and that he was from Microsoft's Tech support. He wanted me to get on my computer right away and he would lead my through some steps to fix. It sounded pretty fishy to me. I told him that there was nothing wrong with my computer and that I didn't believe he was who he said he was and that I didn't appreciate him calling. Then I hung up. I hope that nobody falls for this clown. What a creep! It was great to have my suspicions validated on this forum. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.
I also got the call but said I was on my cell and could he phone me back? I gave him the police station # I wonder if he called?
First they said they were from some IT type company and I should look at the eventviewer which I did and they made me count the 'warning' and 'error' messages and she was very 'upset' about the number of those, then called her 'supervisor' also with an Indian or Bangladeshian accent who continued being full very 'oh that is terrible' remarks. Then he asked me to go to some site or take over my computer where I stopped and said no way. But we want to help you because in your zipcode area many computers have already crashed and died, etc. I refused to go any further and wanted to find out that some ITM sounding first name of theirs where he said he was a legitimate Microsoft techie. So I said I will call my Microsoft techie myself if I need any help. And hung up.
This is a scam phone call. They want to access the computer. The guy had an accent and his name was IVAN.
They called my wife- she called me while on the phone- and we strung them along for over 15 min--these people are gullible as the victim's theyare searching for. They were trying give dloading instructions for their bomb, and my wife kept telling them the URL they were giving was going to very rude and baddy named porn sites that were extremely insulting to his nationality....she got away with naming 5 or 6, I was laughing so hard she couldn't understand me to tell him any others....he had enough and finally severed the call. It's been a long time since I laughed so hard I was crying tears.
