This is the Am Ex security or Fraud Unit... They check for weird charges. Call them back.
It is AMEX fraud services. My advice is never to talk to someone who calls you. ALWAYS call the number on the back of your card after you hang up and explain that you got a call, but to be safe, you are calling the number on your card to verify the authenticity of the call and take it from there.
I just went onto the American Express website and this number is not listed on the site. DO NOT answer the #, it's a SCAM.
This turned out to be a legitimate call from American Express's fraud service. After I received a call from them, they did not ask for any CC information, or personal information; all they asked was whether or not a certain transaction had been made by me on a certain day. The transactions matched purchases I'd actually made, so after some thank yous, I went along my way.I was still a little suspicious, so I called the number on the back of my card to confirm that my account had actually been flagged. I reached Amex customer service, and they said that they had indeed called me pertaining to two charges they thought were fraudulent. Looks legitimate to me.
Except they didn't request me to enter my card number when they called. They just asked about the charges. If they were going to ask my personal information, I would have hung up.
This is a fraud, the caller ID 800-824-9289 is an AMEX number, but the call back number 800-824-1989 is not an Amex number. Amex requests that you call back any time when they call you using the number on the back of your card.
No, that is not a legitimate American Express Website. As a matter of fact, that website is closed. PHISHING EXPEDITION!
Received two calls from this number on my cell phone today asking for my spouse.Called Am Ex, they had nothing noted on my account of any fraud or any calls
I received a mail from PO Box 297812 Ft Lauderdale Florida 33329-7812 with the exactly the same information. The letter was printed on an American Express looking letter head. It looked very official. It showed the last 4 digit of my credit card, a valid looking transaction and an obvious looking fake transaction. It then tells me to call 18008249289 or collect 336-393-1111 to confirm the charges. The letter is signed by R. Bauer, American Express Worldwide Fraud Prevention.I called the 1-800-824-9289 at 5:45 pacific. I got an automated receptionist telling me to punch a number to have a "good time"! I hanged up. I thought I dialed the number wrong so I tried again. I got the same machine message. I hanged up again.I went to my Amex online account to confirm the quoted charge in the letter. The charges were not there.I googled the number and saw this page and others indicating that this number is fraudulent (perpetrates fraudulent scheme). I agree this number and the letter I received was fraudulent.I also agree with the other posters from other sites. Don't call this number. If you want to call Amex, call the number on the back of your card.If you are paranoid, cancel the card or get a new card.I also noticed, from other sites discussing this number, there are posters that claim to be with Amex and states the number is a valid Amex fraud verification line. I suspect these are the same people who are perpetrating the fraud.
I recvd a call ( 2 different times ) from this phone number...stating theyare the Amer Exp Security Group, etc... call and enter your 15 digit card number...or call the number on the back of your card..This cannot be safe, nor on the up and up,,,I think they are randomly calling homes and leaving the same messages. I do not have an American Express Card, and I never had one..so,,,why the 2 phone calls, if they are legit??
