This number phoned me at 8:20 this morning on both home and cell, and left message to call about AMEX on my home line. I did not answer as there was no ID on calls. But I called the "real" AMEX and it was legit - someone had gotten my info (not my card) and started attempting online purchases, so they are cancelling and sending new card.... and going after the online purchaser. Nothing on "call type" applies. This was really AMEX and they verified 800-824-9289 as AMEX.
This is a 100% Legit number. There was an automated message left on my voicemail asking me to call the American Express fraud security department at 800-824-9289 or the number on the back of the card. Called the number that called me first (623-492-6031) and got American Express general services and they had my transaction history for a gasoline purchace from a trip the day before. Got disconnected (cell phone) and called the number on the card when I called back and was transfered to the same department that asked me about the same transaction I was being asked about in the first call.
I did not call this number. I called the one on the back of my card and it was definitely a fraud alert. Glad I called, but I would still just call the number on the back of your credit card for safety!!
How can this number be legit when I don't have, and NEVER have had, an American Express card?
I didn't answer it as it is an unknown number. No message left on my voice mail. I don't have AmEx.
it's a "account password" not a login password to your amex web account, they setup "account passwords" so in case thief gets your card, they wont know your "account password" and wont be able to access you account when they contact amex. Two totally different things, just FYI
I missed a call from this number and also got a text telling me to call this number.Called the number and it was AmEx fraud, they asked for my full card number. There had been a suspicious charge I hadn't made. They canceled my card and shipped out a new one.The suspicious charge didn't show on my online statement. I called the AmEx number on the back of my card and the confirmed the call had been legit, they confirmed my cars number had already been changed and the fraud department was shipping me a new card. This number IS NOT ALWAYS A SCAM!To be safe call the number on the back of your card immediately and ask to be connected to the fraud department.
