While it is true that there are scammers calling people claiming to be from the IRS, this phone number (801-605-1816) is a genuine IRS phone number.
Well, I'm a journalist and called the IRS media relations office this morning, left a message, and when they called back (I let it go to VM), it came in as 801-605-1816. So it seems that in some cases, the IRS *is* using this number. Weird.
Received a call from "U S Government" at 9:32 P M. Did not answer. No message left. I thought calls like this were not suppose to be after 9 p.m. No consideration for late night calls.
Legit IRS toll free number,, returning my phone call.. then gave me her direct line number
they hung up first time then called back and left a message for a Steward something or other...woman was hard to understand, talked in a low tone, garbled, left a # to call back, says it too fast twice... don't know a Steward...
I agree. I just received a call from this number and an IRS Advocate doing some follow-up for me left a message. Surprise - It is legit!
No message left. Other than the fact that I work for the IRS as a customer service rep I have no other dealings with them. Guess I will answer next time they call and find out what's up.
Because the IRS communicates about balance dues by mail not telephone it might be a legit number but it isn't about money owed.
I received a call on my cell phone from some woman who rambled on about some cap account. I am supposed to call her back, but not on friday, she is out of the office. I'll be calling the IRS tomorrow.
I got a voicemail today from (801) 605-1816, asking me to call a "Ms. Jefferson" at 559-498-6774 -- the voicemail said I had "submitted form 12153" and that she was calling about this. No identifying who she represents or anything. I called that number back and had to leave a message. I got a call back within 30 seconds (clearly this [***] was screening calls), and I proceeded to speak with this Ms. Jefferson in what I consider to be one of the most ridiculous conversations I've ever had. First of all, she did not identify herself right off the bat, but asked me for identifying information. Then she said she was calling from the IRS, which she said with a laugh -- which immediately gave herself away as a fraud. The information she had about my tax debt was something she could have gotten from public records, but there were things she DIDN'T know that an IRS tax agent would -- for instance, that 60% of my debt listed was over 10 years old and so uncollectible -- also, she didn't know that I had already filled out and sent in a request for an installment agreement just six weeks earlier. Also, she had the threatening tone of a scammy debt collector when she said I'd have to pay $3600 per month unless I corrected this issue by "sending me your financials immediately" She kept asking me if I was near a fax machine, or if I could go to a "check cashing place" to use their fax machine. She desperately needed my "financials." It became clear that this was a scammer or a third party debt collector of some sort. If she was an actual IRS agent or contracted by the IRS in some way, she is terrible at her job. Asking me to go immediately to a Check Cashing place to fax over my "financials" to give them info about my work and salary (information the IRS already has from my tax filings and W-2 forms)? Please. Block these calls.
