I think I may have the skinny on why some people are having, both bad and good experiences with this IRS phone number. Yes, it may be true this number is the actual number from the IRS Tax Advocate System/Service. It may also be true that if you recently initiated a call, or filed a return that has missing pages (or signature), you might get a call from an agent or advocate with this number showing on your Caller ID. If it is an agent calling directly from the IRS, you should be able to dial this number directly back and connect with them. If you received a call from a Tax Advocate, a division of the IRS that supposedly tries to help people work through "situations" with the IRS. Were the problem lies is in the fact that hackers know how to exploit VOIP systems can also mask their outgoing calls to show it to be calling from this same exact number. In fact, a hacker with access to a VOIP DIY service that allows people to configure their own caller ID's, can configure their outgoing call to show ANY number they want, not just the IRS's number. They can also mask their number to look like they are calling from your Bank, or any other financial institution. Hence, it is always good to call the person back using the phone number that is displayed on the IRS website, or company website and use an extension to re-connect with them. Once you are 100% sure you are dealing with a legitimate person, you can forego this process. With the above in mind, it is always better to call the number listed on the most recent IRS letter you received, or any instructions on the most recent form(s) you submitted. Then after you make contact with the IRS, any agent should be able to confirm and/or transfer you to the designated agent or advocate that originally reached out to you. I hope this helps.
This number legit. I have been in an audit with the IRS and I have been into the Auditors office so I know she is really with the IRS. She just called me from this number. Although I agree the IRS are Crooks it is really the IRS calling from this number.
After reading all the comments above (and listening to the voicemail left for me) I returned the call. It is, in fact, an IRS number and she was actually quite helpful. As someone above noted, if you initiated any business with them they will call you. Hope this helps.
801-605-1816 is not a scam. They called me first. I did not answer. They they called my wife. She answered and it was a lady from the IRS asking about a form we sent it to set up payments. She asked a question about an insurance EOB that we sent with it. No one else could have known that info or other info she asked about
