Received call about completing the Census report mailed to me about a month ago. This is the 4th such call and they had me complete it over the phone. It took about 20 minutes to complete their questions. Is this a legitimate census? Should I check for identity theft?

The United States Census Bureau does NOT perform solicitation by phone. It is also important to note that they do NOT perform a Census which is "mandatory" but every 10 years at which point the will send a Census taker to your home with I'D and proper documentation. The last one was in 2010 which means the next one is 2020. In fact the the census bureau is not even fully funded during those years. This is a scam! Never give out personal information!!

Which address they going to send a person - " the reason they are calling about your address is they may have 2 or more addresses on file for you or may have had mail returned." If they know address why to bother confirming over phone.

I got a call from those idiots as well. Asking me to complete my survey that I send in. I only gave them the information of how lived in the house and how many there were. I did not see a reason that they should know how many water fixtures I had. This lady wanted me to go out and count how many apartments there were in the complex, what the hell?! I told her that I have the right to my privacy. I told her that most of the stuff on that survey either I didn't know, it didn't apply to me or it was none of their business. She told me that it was mandatory and that I had to. I told her that I didn't have to do [***]. She said that I didn't have a choice because building contractors needed to know that kind of information. I told her that I wasn't going to give her any other information and if they didn't like it to sue me. She said that they'd be calling back. I told her not to expect an answer. Big brother is watching us! Is this really our government? What have we come to?

Have had multiple calls from them, have hung up, asked not to call back, and etc. They are professing to be from the US Census Bureau. Today they threatened fines if questions were not answered. We asked for a supervisor, she confirmed that fines would be issued and they would send someone to your home. They did not have the correct address. Calls are one thing, threats are another. The number they refer you to as well as the calling number are listed on multiple internet sites as either telemarketers or possible theft identiy rings.

Received numberous calls from this number before I was able to investigate it's legitimacy. To do so I contacted the US Census Regional office for my state to confirm the number and the survey. As it was explained to me, begunnung with the 2010 census only a short form census was sent/required. Previously there had been both a long and short form census. This survey takes the place of that long form census. They do ask many questions that can be intrusive but if you check out not only their website but also talk to your state's regional office they explain the reasoning for these questions. You are all correct in not automatically giving information if you have not initiated the contact but if you do in fact legitimize the source, at least in this case, your information is valuable for your region as far as funding & resources.

I got the call on nov 2, 2007 at 1:10pm but I was not home. I checked my voicemail & the lady said she was with the census bureau. I did not call back.

This call is from the US Census but I disagree with the whole American Community Survey - I filled the dang thing out and sent it back, there's no reason for them to call me for more info because I can't give them any clearer answers than I already gave. They can keep leaving messages on voice mail or knock on my door all day because I'm not answering anything else.
