They called me on my cell. My WORK cell, which I have never given them. My daughter has a student loan with them that is also up to date. So yes, Great Lakes is legit. However, the call I received was not. They left no message and again, they called my number on a phone they have no record of associated with my name. VERY suspicious in this case.
Update - they just called again and I answered (probably a mistake). They were looking for someone else and when I said they weren't at this number, he asked if I knew of. I said no and to remove this number from their list. We'll see if it hellps... (doubtful)
Totally legit. It is Great Lakes student loan company. They often call if your deferment is up or if you need to make a payment. I have my loans with them. They hardly ever leave a message and it is not my experience that they ask for your SS. Usually the last 4 or some other information first.
I have used them to rehab my loan for a while now. And some of their operators can be really gruff and not handle their position very well. So, I can definitely see why you think they are a scam. If they ask a question that you do not want to answer ask them to tell you the information they have. They have it. They just need to verify it. That is how I handled it. Ask them to state what they have first. One company called me and was being extremely rude because I would not give them information. I told them to mail it to me. they asked for my address. Now, hold on. How do you have my telephone number that is A) Not listed B) Unregistered C) Not given to anyone. But yet, you don't have my address which is listed, I have been a residence of for numerous years? Just be careful is all.
Have no student loans or any loans of any kind. My kids have no student loans. Had same phone number over 10 years. Didn't leave message. Blocked them.
Got a call from this number and was left a voicemail. Voicemail said it was Great Lakes student loans I had 14 days to pay. Obviously a scam. Don't give information to these people.
I was just called from this number and since I did not recognize it, I let it go to voicemail. They did not leave a message. If this is Great Lakes and a legit call, they should leave a message for me to call them back. I have both of my student loans serviced with them and neither one is late or behind in payments. They are both current.Just because they say they are a legitimate company does not mean that the person calling is from that company. It is true that when *I* call they ask for my information to verify it is me but I wouldn't just willy nilly give them my information when I'm called. Also, if this number is connected to Great Lakes, it should show up as Great Lakes when you do a search online.
A student loan company calling at 8 on? Besides that I'm already got something arranged for my overdue student loans. So they shouldn't be contacting me period. That and this is a brand new phone and like 3 people have the number
