Was contacted again, claimed to be 'Great Lakes' and were looking for someone whom I've never heard of. They claimed that this person had listed me as a reference. I stated that I've never heard of this person, and was told I'd be taken off the contact list. If you see no more posts from me, it's because I've not been contacted again. (I was never asked for information beyond my name)
The way numbers re recycled now, get on the phone and say you don't know the person they are calling for. Duh? how hard is that.,.If you have a loan, have you ever defaulted? I have and Great Lakes was my service r. I defaulted on 3000 and paid back 10k . It is in your promissory note that companies like this are required to let you know, on a continuous basis what you are headed for. It is the federal government people. They are the only organization by law that can Identify you by your ssn. Which means they will find and you and they will get their money. I imagine a loan the size of 50k could ruin your life. Answer the phone and work with these people.
This is a legitimate company, contracted by the federal government. Students take out plus loans all the time in parents names. With ID theft rampant, you do not want to ignore the calls. Take a minute to make sure they are not calling for you. Financial expert Clark Howard advises that a student loan servicer call is not to be ignored, at can destroy you down the road if you are on the hook for a loan, or you have been compromised.
This is Great Lakes Student Loan. They called to remind me that a payment on my son's loan was missed. I am a co-signer on his loan. They did not ask me for any personal information. She was very helpful and said that they had several repayment options if my son could not make the regular payments. When I said that I would remind him to make a payment, she thanked me and that was the end of the call. They had called me because my son recently lost his cell phone and got a new phone with a new phone number, so the number they had in their files was disconnected. He made the missed payment and I have not received any more calls.
I get 1 missed from this number every few weeks, they have never left a voicemail and I haven't received any written correspondence about it. I definitely have an outstanding student loan, but it seems odd they can't just leave a message
