It's great Lakes borrowers I just talked to the guy and I am behind on my loans. Set up payment plan. Didn't give any info. I just asked for him to identify what company he was with and I immediately knew because I am in fact behind on loans.
They are not legit! Call the original source and always verify whomever you ever have issues! with
Or you were named as a reference when someone else got a loan, and they are calling you trying to contact the person with delinquent loans. If you don't have a loan, this is likely the case
I have student loans with Great Lakes. They took over my student loans for the US Dept. of Education. They are legit. I've been behind before but and all you have to do if you can't make payments, is to ask for a forbearance. I believe you can take up to 50 months forbearance with student loans. If you at least contact them and make arrangements they will stop calling every day. It's easy and it doesn't ding your credit!
I'd like to point out the absurdaty of the themes of most of the common complaints here.First, when you take out a debt, then don't tell your debtor about your new address or phone, do you seriously not expect them to try to contact you for the updated information?Secondly, do you think a debtor would be stupid enough to lend to you without having a 2nd or 3rd person (reference) they can contact if you disappear?Thirdly: They do send out letters with your account # on every piece of paper, it's call read your mail, and respond to it if it says you owe money and you don't remember.Fourthly, a little thing called Federal Privacy Laws probit organizations like Great Lakes from releasing any account information or the nature of the company without verifying you as an authorized party first, hence the SSN or Account #.Fifth, check out nslds.ed.gov, this is the goverment's record of all Federal Student Loans, the they seem to appreciate Great Lakes the most because they are the biggest servicer for the Dept of EdSix, go ahead, ignore the calls, be rude to the Great Lakes workers, neglecting your loans only makes them worse through garnishments on your wages and taxes. Eventually you default, and forfeit deferement/forgiveness/forbearce options that Great Lakes is calling to offer you to resolve your deliquency, and collections is way nastier than a little old Student Loan Servicer
Keeps calling me (1-800-236-4300) Great Lakes Collection. Please stop calling my number. My nephew does not live here, If you keep calling me, I will send you a cease and desist letter. Then if that doesn't work, I will take you to court! Is that perfectly clear???
If this number is actually with Great Lakes, then why do they not leave a message. This number has called both my work and cell number within a few minutes of each other, however they have not left a message on either one.I have loans with Great Lakes, but my first payment is not due until May 2011, and it is only the end of April. I also plan to return to school this summer, so I will not be paying on it until I complete my schooling.Do these people realize that I only have to take 6 credits to keep them at bay, and I can do this for the rest of my life? I just might do this as long as they keep bugging me a month before I am due to give them money.
Great Lakes is one of the better student loan servicing companies. If your loans are overdue, you're far better off working it out with them than having it sent off somewhere else. They do set up payment plans and extensions that are FAR more reasonable than other companies. Just sayin!
I have received several calls from this number; never leaving a message. Today, I returned their call and was immediately prompted to "enter" my social security number, like that's going to happen. I do not believe this is a legit company as I do not have student loans and don't know of anyone who does. Call the BBB, they would know.
