This is for student loans. Those of you who don't have student loans have been put as a reference, or its just a coincidence due to someone putting an incorrect phone number.
I also recieved a call from them too. They said my friend put me as a reference on her school loan and they needed to contact her, This was the call back number they left w/ option 2 for the address dept. I didnt responde but I know for a fact my friend hasnt been paying her bills so I doubt she pays her student loans
They do send letters in the mail, if you choose to ignore the letters and phone calls they will send you to a collections company.
They call some of my numbers every day. I don't have a student loan with them, and I don't know the individuals they are trying to reach.Unfortunately, they don't believe me that I don't know the people they are trying to get in touch with, so they keep calling.
I received an e-mail from them and the first thing I did was look for sites like this about possible scams. After checking my credit history, calling my school, and checking my other loans, the only one I don't have a lot of information about is one I got this year from the Department of Education. When I called who I thought was supposed to have my loan for them, they didn't have it (may get it later), but they did say that Great Lakes services Department of Education loans like they did. So I called Great Lakes, and explained I wasn't comfortable with giving out certain information (ie SSN), and they told me the correct school that my loan came from, and that it was from this year. Still wary about them, I requested a copy of my MPN that they have to be sent to me at my new address, before I give them any more information about myself (ie married name). I'll post again when I'm sure that they are legit.
Legit or Not...NEVER EVER EVER give your SS number to anybody! There are always other ways around it.
I recieved my student loan bill for $9500 and I only borrowed $5500...so I don't know if they are screwing around with me or if this is a mistake...will call them in the AM...thankx for the contact numbers...Shirley
you aren't crazy to ignore them, nor should you give out your SS over the phone to any Bozo who calls and says they are Great Lakes whatever. If they are legit, then they can send letters to the people who owe the loans or figure out a way to identify themselves as legit. Otherwise, F*#k 'em
Called to tell me my account with Great Lakes was past due and to confirm mailing address. They're the ones who deal w my (thankfully small) student loan, but just in case it was a scam I didn't give them my address or any other info over the phone except to confirm that my address hadn't changed.
