Again, posting in response to my previous note. After my call I received the requested Master Promissary Note in the mail, which is correct and what I have in my personal records. In my case this isn't a scam, and it is a real Student Loan Debt Servicing Agency. They service student loans for the Department of Education. If you are doubtful of this information, you, or the person who they are contacting you about, needs to check their student loans and see where they are being serviced. If they are asking you for information about someone, at least in form the person in question because they most likely didn't update their contact information and had you listed as a reference.
Because at first I didn't know this was their number... I've been ignoring them. Look up the number yourself! You'll see that this actually is Great Lakes.
Great Lakes is student loan company out of Atlanta. I am currently behind on my student loan with them:( Did your wife just get a new number with in the last year? Numbers are constantly being recycled and this sort of thing occurs when the previous person has dropped the number. It is very annoying.. Next time just answer let them know Margarita does not have this number anymore. Shouldn't be bothered again. If you want, sure you have, look up Greatlakes.org the numbers should line up.
They are legit, they DO send out letters, but often those are ignored too, i have received letters from them, as well as calls, and i do have a student loan through them.
I have no problem with them calling as my loan is past due right now, but I'm not going to answer when my caller ID only lists 800 SERVICE as the caller, and they have never once left a message. They could at least have the courtesy of doing that.
Also places do ask for SS often (usually last 4 digits) to confirm who you are, i know wells fargo does it when you are unable to provide other information to prove who you are before they reveal account information, (i know this from calling them, when i needed to get a new card sent out, not because they called me) now im not saying give out your SS to whoever asks, but there are companies who already have it because you gave it to them, and i doubt you can get a student loan without it.
I keep getting calls from these people and I have never had a student loan. But then again, I am not even the person they are looking for. They have been told this. They have been told to stop calling. And they do for a week or two. But then they start calling again, and again, and again. If anyone else is having this problem and need their address, Great Lakes Higher Education, 2401 International Way, Madison WI 53704 (608) 246-1700 Don't know what good it will do you but there it is.
Three months into our sutdent loan we received call to "Please call great lakes at 1- 800 236-4300. ..." When we called them back they wanted us to ender the SS# and we didn't - but rather waited until we got a human being to talk with. We asked who they were and they told us they were Great Lakes calling about student loans. It was at that point that were learned were were over due on payments. This is the first we had heard from Great Lakes. Prior to that we had not received any mail from this lender (so no way could we now we had a payment due). They said they had sent us several mailings (which we had not received). They checked our address and said they would re-mail to us. They also said they would send the payment book out to us and 9 days later we still do not have it. So we went online and made the payment. We followed up with a call to them asking when we could expect the payment book. The woman said "you are past due with your payment" before she said anything else. We responded that her records should reflect that we paid online last night. She then said it showed that we paid online but that it would take 2 days for the online payment to be posted. So now, we will be keeping an eye on them to make sure our credit does not go bad because of their sloppy work. In the end, Great Lakes may be legit, but their practices may not be the most accurate.
