Well genius either you took out a student loan at some time or the number they are calling belonged to someone else at a time and they had a student loan. MyGreatLakes is a loan servicing company for student loans. They do not own the loans, the just collect them for whomever the owner of the loan is , these days the government. It is that simple.

Got a call from them. I called back said they wanted my sisters phone number who used me as a reference. I asked what company this was, and they said Great Lakes information. I asked what do they do and she said, we're a servicing company. I asked what do you service, and she said she can't give out that information. Ummmm, hello? Like I'm going to give out personal information on a family member and you can't tell me what the f**k you do? I told her I don't participate in those kind of games, and this call is being recorded and they are to drop me from their list or I will take legal action against them. She said she would drop me from their list. It's a collection agency, using relatives get information on the debtor. Sorry, no sale.

So, I've received an e-mail from "Great Lakes" saying that my information needed to be updated. Clicked on the link and I saw that SSN was required. X'ed out the window, erased the e-mail, moved to my next e-mail. Those sort of e-mails are more frequent by each passing day. If your really bothered by this e-mail, why don't you make an appointment with your college's financial aid advisor? He/She would be able to let you know exactly what you need to do, and tell you that the "Great Lakes" e-mail is bogus. In addition, do you really think that people that found this e-mail to successfully help, come to a blog about an illegitimate website? If you said "no," your correct. The many supportive "Great Lakes" people on here are obviously hired on to this company to specifically get the forum users to believe that, "It's legit!" A wag of the finger to you pesky telemarketers. May the same misfortune dwell endlessly in your future.

Depends how long the loan is out for and how much the interest rate was, it could be that much after 4 years or more , easily, some loans, interest starts immediately, other parts of the loan, the interest is deferred till you leave school, some people have a combination. $9500 is possible on $5500

Half the people who posted on here seem completely out of their mind or something. I actually do have a student loan through this company (Great Lakes). Due to financial trouble, I havent been able to pay and I have been ignoring their phone calls and letters in the mail. But I do look at the letters I receive. I'm around 270 days over due (I know this by the letters I 've been receiving) and the person on the phone also mentioned this. This isn't some group trying to deceive you just to get your info. They were calling me in regards to seeing if I needed a deferrment of payment to prevent default of my loan. Just figured I'd throw in my 2 cents here so that people don't think this is some scam company or whatever.

This call was from Great Lakes Education Services. This company had called my mother asking for updated information for me. I had moved and changed my cell phone number, so they used references I listed on my student loan application when I started college. This company is LEGIT! Chance are that if they are calling asking for you, you either have a relative that is falling behind on their student loan payments, OR you yourself are falling behind on your payments.Trust me when I say to TALK TO THEM! They already have your SS#, and that is the only way they can pull up your account status. I had a loan that was supposed to be paid monthly since June, and I didn't know (remember, I moved and changed phone numbers), and they let me defer payments all the way until June of next year.DO NOT IGNORE THESE PEOPLE unless you ABSOLUTELY have NO IDEA who they are calling for! They allowed me to avoid collections by simply returning their call!

It's kinda sad if this is what they said is true company. So why don't it show with the real company name instead shows it up as "Toll Free Svcs"?It's been a rule that I don't answer "Toll Free Services" nor A City Name that comes up on Caller ID, and we don't call the m back. And if we do answer the phone when they call THEY hang up on US.If they only place their Real Company Name on caller ID will be a different story.
