I'd been getting this call too. It's legit. I had a loan I didn't know about and it was past due. You'd better act on that cause it shows up on your credit report. :(
Although I have a loan payment that I pay through Great Lakes ... it is current in payments (I schedule monthly payments on the due date through my online bank account, so it arrives on time each month). There should be no reason whatsoever for them to be calling me. I do receive the letters they send out but don't ignore them. Still as my payments are always on time there's no reason to send it a second time and thus should be no reason for them to call me either! Each payment is up to date!!! My latest payment was received at the beginning of this month... it's now about the third week in April! Call was not necessary. Period. But as to those claiming it's Legit (Great Lakes), they are! My scheduled payments to them DO go through the Dept. of Education directly and then Great Lakes receives that!!!
Three months into our loan with Great Lakes we received a call to "Please call great lakes at 1- 800 236-4300. ..." When we called them back they wanted us to ender the SS# and we didn't - but rather waited until we got a human being to talk with. We asked who they were and they told us they were Great Lakes calling about student loans. It was at that point that we learned we were over due on payments. This is the first we had heard from Great Lakes. Prior to that we had not received any mail from this lender (so no way could we know we had a payment due). They said they had sent us several mailings (which we had not received). They checked our address and said they would re-mail to us. They said they would send the payment book out to us, and 9 days later we still do not have it. So we went online and made the payment. We followed up with a call to them asking when we could expect the payment book. The woman said "you are past due with your payment" before she said anything else. We responded that her records should reflect that we paid online last night. She then said it showed that we paid online but that it would take 2 days for the online payment to be posted. So now, we will be keeping an eye on them to make sure our credit does not go bad because of their sloppy work. They may be legit, but their practices may not be.
FKIN Great Lakes suxxxx.Calling 80 Billion times a day. Here are some other phone numbers they use: 608-246-1550614-232-9868612-548-2001800-236-2700404-240-1813
They just called me while I was in the middle of class, so I ignored the call. I am pretty sure they manage my loans for my school, and they probably just wanted to talk about my info. I figure I will let them call me back (hopefully while I am not in class), and I'll request contact through email. If they don't call back, I'm going to assume that they did the wrong number. Especially since I am pretty sure that I put my parent's home # as my contact info for my student loan.
They called in reference to a parent/student loan we have with them, they simply and easily deferred the loan until after my son graduates college. The guy I spoke with could not have been nicer.
said that they were the post office. called my 70 year old mother claiming that I refered her to them. Wanted my personal info including address and phone #.
