What you say is true but how many loan holders begin calling daily after one is 3 days late on a payment. Or demanding payment for both the late one and the next months too. These are not tactics that anyone should have to put up with. I finally changed the contact information to myself so they can't intimidate my daughter into making extra payments. It may be legit and/or legal but that doesn't take away from the fact that school loans have turned into the greatest scam ever perpetrated on the middle class. $100k and no jobs. Thanks a lot. And if you don't think this little arrangement between schools/government/lenders was a scam ask yourself why it is they managed to get this and only this type of loan to be non-dischargable in bankruptcy.

It came to our attention that the phone company used by Great Lakes had an issue and instead of the caller id indicating Great Lakes, the phone company had it as Lorenzo. I've heard it's fixed now. We found out this was random, so not every call made had that name.

I USED TO have a problem with Great Lakes when I was ignoring them, they warned me several times through the mail about default and all that business, but since I started making payments again everything is good now...except that the remaining balance is not 0. The way how I handle them is I do everything through the mail, meaning I send them money orders and they send me a statement every month. I send them more than the minimum monthly payment, now as of February it is showing "next required payment, April 2013."I did get the balance paid down by a bunch though that's basically the only good thing about this stupid loan. Hopefully I'll get this terrible thing off my back before I turn 40. From now on, paying cash for everything even if it's another house. If I don't have enough cash then I probably don't need it.

Parents take out loans too & it's totally legit that older people have student loans for there "kids". Great Lakes is totally regulated by the US Dept of Education and all the laws that govern companies that deal with private data. Take the time to call & explain you are not right party the number is deleted! Simple as that. If you're too lazy to call back and tell them to delete your wrong number than you deserve to get repeat phone calls. Calls are monitored and recorded - dah! Call to report problems and you will eliminate them instead of getting pissed off and writing stuff here. You could actually HELP some student out by making sure GL knows they have a wrong number. Outside companies do calls too & if they misrepresent themselves call to report it! Dah!

EVEN if they are supposedly legit, who is stupid enough to give even the last four of your social out via the phone? Come on, seriously. Mail catches up with you eventually, if you submitted a forward via the USPS.Legit loan servicing companies subscribe to the USPS address change database, which generally takes about six months to catch up with you. If you are paying your bills, then you would have updated the info directly with the lender. Anyone who doesn't is just an idiot and should not have been given credit in the first place. Enough said.If they can not get a hold of you, well, then it is likely that they will seek a default judgement against you. Depending on the state you live in, that can be collectable for a VERY long time. When it is Federal-backed student loan, that is for your ENTIRE life. They will deduct the judgement out of your social security check when you are retired BEFORE it even gets deposited into your bank account. Want to live on peanut butter when you are 65? Go ahead, don't pay your student loans. Freaking idiots.Don't they have a moron test before they grant credit in the form of student loans?

Keep calling me for 3 years. They asked for the name that sounded like Dwyanes Wade but I am not the one. Told them numerous times to take my phone number off their list but they never listened. For these years, they call from different numbers every single day. Extremely annoying.

I received a letter saying a cosigned a student loan for Nicole Dresch. I don't know this person and I never signed for anyone. I called the number on the letter to ask why and to send me a copy of documents that I signed. They said they couldn't do that until I gave my date of birth. Of course I'm not about to give my personal info to anyone. I guess I will call an attorney or something. I'm afraid someone stole my identity.

Just got called and indeed my time to begin paying off my student loans is coming up. If you're getting calls from great lakes then- Pay your loans deadbeat or- Tell your kids to pay their student loans they're being deadbeats or- Some deadbeat put you down as a referenceGlad to see so many people are keeping their information safe, but don't just make assumptions. Do a little research so you really know what's going on.

I kept getting calls from them so I finally called them back. They asked for my SSN and I said no and they were very polite. They asked for my phone number and asked for name to see if they could tie me to the account. It turns out someone put the wrong number down.
