I received a call that was supposed to be from Chase fraud division asking to confirm purchases. The last four digits of the card they gave me was NOT a credit card I have. I called the Chase number on the back of my card and they confirmed it was NOT a card I have or that any fraud division activity was being initiated on my account.
Angelwriter is right. Exactly the same happened to me.Two small charges ( 1.95 and 2.95). Could be a practice run before the big score. I'm glad the fraud department is on the ball. I also got a new card number.
sounds suspicious that a "fraud" dept has time to call about$11. amounts.I wouldn't give out info over the phone. They can credit your account on their own, they have the info, or they would mail out info with your statement.
Received a call from this number at work. I don't answer numbers I don't recognize. Looked up the number and found this site. I do have a card w/ Chase. I called the customer service number on the back of the card. They were just verifying a recent (and valid) change of address and some recent (and valid) charges. So in my case, they were just doing their job. If fraud report numbers call, always ask what the problem is (if you answer the phone) and then call back the customer service number yourself.
If Chase suspects fraud, why in the hell don't they just email me? Better yet, Chase could have sent an "alert" to my online account. I never answer phone calls from toll free numbers, period.
I received a call from this number, and since I couldn't find it listed on the Chase website I called the phone number on the back of my credit card. They confirmed that the call *was* legitimate, including giving me the exact time the phonecall was made.So yes - this number is legitimate. But anytime you're not sure, you're *always* safe calling the number on the back of your credit card.
I recommend if you get a call like this that you call the number on the back of your credit card first and if it's a legit fraud call, they can transfer you to that department. That way you know who you are dealing with for sure. It turns out that the number shown above was Chase's fraud dept calling about some suspicious charges on my account. The vendor had the wrong expiry date for my card and kept trying the charge over and over. That triggered the fraud call and they put a security hold on my card until we responded to the call. So it's not a good idea to do nothing when you get one of these calls. Again, I recommend calling the number on the back of your card in all cases. I'm an insurance agent, trained in identity theft prevention and this would prevent any scam attempt that is asking for your card number over the phone. They should never need all of you credit card number or all of your social security number. They would NEVER need both your credit card number and the expiry date and would NEVER need the number off the back of your card. Beware of anyone calling or e-mailing for this information!
I went thru the same routine, but now have second thoughts. At first, they sound genuine, asked for many personal info to validate. However, now, I think anyone else (bogus people) could have done the same schtick to steal info. They asked for birthdate, validate entire account nbr, then finally get your home address (to cancel current card and mail replacement one one). With such info, any half-hearted thief could have enough incentive to start stealing. Next time, I would be more vigilant, and ask them to verify what was charged in my last bill, etc..., i.e to prove themselves first. Their details about attempted charges now seem lame, such as 2 transactions for $2 each. Anyone who really is fraudulent would have gone for the max possible, at the first attempt, right? Caveat emptor... Live, let live and LEARN!
