It was freaky, the caller 800-483-8314, called before a relative went to jail. They asked if I wanted to set up an account. Questionable, at best.
dudes its a LEGIT company that contracts with the jails. i have an inmate friend in a jail. i once put money on an acct 75.00 when he called collect. they charge that acct 25.00 per call.if you'd bother to call the friggin number back, it asks you to press option 2 to hear your acct balance. the call is linked to the phone number YOU once put money on.if you have money on it - like i did, they just nag you with calls to put more money on the acct.if youve never used this service then its one of 2 things - this was the last phone number associated with an acct for an inmate and you have that said number now, OR you or your spouse/GF whatever is accepting calls from an inmate.bother to investigate fore you yell scam.idiots.
No they can't make collect calls. If you really have a friend or relative locked up and you want them to be able to call you, there is a secure website where you log on to set up an account to deposit money, and add to it as it runs low if you so desire, but they no longer have the ability to make collect calls like they used to. You can specify they can call only you or you can set it up so they can call anyone they want to.
These people are con artist going around running scams on people playing on good people's sympathy/identity theft they get your credit card information and that is it.
Its not a scam. One of my friends was arrested and tried calling, and this number is the number that sets up payments for calls from inmates.
My son got a call from this number on hid CELL! He knows no one in jail. Regardless what anyone says here, I feel it's a scam. Especially if they are asking for a cc# and other financial info.
This number is probably generically used by correctional facilities. i.e. a service provider for just such places. I do know that I was called from Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County in Northern California by this number. It is not a prank call. Maybe a miss dial by an inmate but definitely not a prank.
Yes, it is definitely a scam. If you call that number they have you on caller ID and make it sound as though they are associating that phone number with an "offender" (as they call it). Then they ask you to set up an account for the "offender" by pressing "1". If you press that they ask you for your credit card number but never give you the name or other identifying information for the "offender". It is definitely a scam. If you give them your credit card number you will be ripped off. It will not be applied to anyone you know.
