I got a call yesterday and today from the same 800-483 number and it was an inmate in the Madison County Jail .

Yeah I received one as well, I emaild the company for the jail, they said that they don't have the numbers that are being used. I don't know anyone in jail. This is wrong.

It is a scam. There are legitimate ways to put money on someone's books but this is not one of them. If you don't know if someone you care about has been arrested there are legitimate ways to find that out too. Most correctional facilities have information on their websites about how to check if someone you know is in jail. Setting up an account to make phone calls from jail is ludicrous. Think it through. All the phones inmates have access to are pay phones. How do you set up or post money for a random pay phone??? They usually have access to more than one pay phone so which one does your money go to? It would never work like that.

This is not a scam. It is a company that provides a calling service to law enforcement agencies nationwide. That's why one number appears to be coming from multiple states. The reason you got a call from this number is because the inmate that tried to call you didn't have money on his/her books to call you with a service that doesn't require you to set up an account to accept a collect call on your mobile device. If it was a scam, they'd make it very easy for you to simply press "1" to accept fake calls. I have an acquaintance in jail that has tried to contact me with this service after running out of money. It's legit.

THIS IS A SCAM. NO JAIL USES THIS SERVICE. Wake up people, these are fake reviews by the perpetrators.

I am getting messages from this number one or 2 times a day. I don't know any inmates, nor have I called this number!!

Got a call at work from this number. Total scam. I don't know anybody in jail, and if somebody I know went to jail, they would know my cell number, not my work number. Nobody has my work number that would call from jail if they got arrested. Ridiculous!!

I just got a call from this number stating in was for a call from a correctional institution. I don't know anyone in jail and the call came in on my work cell. I think someone got a hold of a cell list as recently my work cell has gotten about five or six scam calls a week and several text messages of "Hi", "Hey ya buddy!", and other similar ones. I did get one with a reasonable amount of cursing but it seems like over the last six weeks that phone which never gets scam calls started getting them. I have AT&T and has only happened on the cell.

It is Global Tel-Link, and while I hate all of these companies that make money off the families of those in jail, I have to admit that their rates are almost fair. $0.25 per minute to call from GA to WI. I am an attorney, so I have to deal with these companies, some of them charge $5.00 for the first minute and close to $2.00 for each additional minute. ***If you do not want calls, listen to the menu, they will block the calls.
