Ben, you're an idiot. You must work for Bank of America because they do this all the time.... at least five times to me during the past two years.
I thought the same thing, but that number is on the back of my Capital One credit card. It's the customer service number. Not sure why they are calling if I didn't call them but it's not a phoney number.
I would not give any information about your account. The banks calling have all the information on their screens and if they don't then they are not the bank. There are a number of vrified fraud cases of people getting calls or text messages from what is to be their bank and it is not. Once they have your information they can get your money. Some will even say it is about your account when you do not have an account with the supposed bank that is calling. They want you to give up information they do not have. Especially beware if they do not leave at least a short message on your answering machine.
I take it back!! I just called Capital one and pressed zero for my information until I got a real person. I made them look up my account with ONLY my name and phone number. He said that there was nothing wrong and that Capital One would not just called me for the heck of it and not leave a message. He said to NOT give out my info if they call again.Bottom line, I think someone might be calling from a number and masking it as a Capital One customer service number (if that's even possible). Because the number calling me is the Capital One customer service number but the guy I spoke to said they didn't call me!!Moral of the story, if they call and ask for information, tell them you would like to hang up and redial for security reasons. I bet they hang up on you!!!
I received a call from this number, and a nice woman said she was calling from Capital One, and gave the last 4 of my credit card no. She then asked me to verify my billing zip... Funny thing is, she had the OLD address that had been changed about 6 months prior. She pulled up my account information using my birthday, and then I asked her about updating my address... She said she needed the last 3 digits (CID) on the back of the card to update it... Which of course made me hesitate.I stopped there because it just seemed strange that she wouldn't have the updated address, even though it was updated and I had been receiving mail from them (I double checked afterward and it was correct online). I'm glad I stopped because she was trying to sell me some sort of payment insurance - I am not sure if it was really Capital One (some division that is obviously pretty far removed to not have correct account details) or if it was a scam. Either way, I decided I would be the one reaching out to Capital One if I needed anything... If it was Capital One, step up. Customers don't want to think that they're being scammed with your name being used...
Just received a call on my cell phone from this number. I did not answer, and they did not leave a message.
This number called me this morning and luckily I didn't get to my phone on time. I searched the number online and ran into this thread. 6 hours later my phone rings again some nice sounding lady gives me this storyI am calling to discuss changes on your credit card due to new legislation can you please verify your zip code?I responded that I'd rather not give any information informationShe said that she already had it just needed me to verify. So I responded ok if you already have it then give me 2 choices and I will tell you which one is itShe said she could not do that So I said I couldn't either and hung up My guess is that certain transactions like at the gas pump ask you for your zip code after sliding your credit card and they use that to verify that its you. They might be able to do the same on bigger purchases,Thanks to everyone for posting I would of never known to be cautious after all your zip code sounds pretty safe to give out over the phone and I probably would have done so without thinking twiceCool Idea maybe someone can give the wrong zip code and see if they take it. If they do then obviously they never had that information in front of them to begin with and its a SCAM for sure.
Just received a call from this number, person on the other line missed me picking up the phone and was asking a colleague "I have 4 sales why don't I get balloons?"
I have had Capital One for many Years. They have been there for me. Yes, I agree the Interest is High. BOA is worse. I Love Capital One. If I do want something from them I will call them. Does everyone Know that all you have to do is. Tell them You do not want Adds or to buy anything more from them if you tell them. That you will call them. Capital One does send off the Updates to your account and the other add on which you can get from Capital One. I think The only thing would be DROP THE INTEREST TO CASH & MERCHANDISE WHICH YOU CHARGE TO BUY.
