Received a call from this number today. It was Capital One. I picked up, they asked if this was indeed Ian, let me know they were from Capital One, and asked for my birthday. They then let me know they were calling to make sure I received my new credit card in the mail (the old one had expired) and if I had authorized it. It was a security call to make sure I was the person who had authorized and that someone else didn't pick up my card. When I authorized the card a couple days ago, they informed me that, by law, if you don't verify who you are, they CAN NOT tell you anything about the account, even admitting that you have one. So to all those who are nervous giving your information and then don't, they can't tell you anything. That's to protect you so someone else doesn't call up and they just let them know all your information.
The problem with that is scammers can make ANY number they want appear on your caller ID. When you get a call from 800-955-7070, it could be from a scammer offshore. I never accept 800 calls. I call the number myself - entering the number by hand. The other scam I've run into lately is banks text-messaging me about a business credit card that has been locked. I'll NEVER text back - I don't have a business credit card.
After reading all these comments, because I have also been getting phone calls...I would like to put my 2 cents in yes..800-955-7070 is the number on the credit card...BUT there are all sorts of apps out there than can make your number a different one on the caller id.
ok i have a capital one credit card and was recieving calls from the same number well i ignored them and blocked my number and called back but i refused to give them info " currently my banking has been accesssed and my money stolen and all my info compromise" "payday loan scammers" so i am very cautious with who calls! i logged into my online account and got the online support number contacted them and they had stated that someone has filled out an appinglication using my info and that the 18009557070 number is the fraud department, that i should return their call and only give them my name number zip and request their id number, if i am ok with the info i recieve i should go ahead and give them my account number..... they better be right!
It could be legit but I got a horrible gut feeling with the guy who called me from this number. He would not tell me the nature of the phone call until I gave my birthdate. Anyone with info on my credit card who is fishing for personal info on me who can't even state a reason for the phone call becomes suspicious in my mind. After he seemed pissed I didn't give him my birthdate and asked why he was calling I slammed my phone shut.
Received about 6 calls from this number yesterday, they never left a message. I called the number back and received the same prompt as everyone else, asking me to enter my 16 digit account number. Of course, I did not enter the number and checked my statement immediately to see if there were any unknown transactions.Today, I called the number for Capital One on my Capital One statement to see if they had in fact been trying to get in touch with me. Turns out, I had been sent a Capital One card and never activated it. They were calling to make sure I had received it and wanted to activate it. If you google the number (800-955-7070), you will see that the number is listed as a contact number for Capital One. Never give out your information but, be proactive when it comes to your credit!
