This number called me this morning saying they noticed I had a security issue on my computer. At first I thought this could be a call about a work computer because our IT is outsourced. However, I asked which computer and they "[nervous pause] Your home computer. Windows." I immediately said I do not own a windows computer and hung up.This is obviously a scam trying to access personal information.
My husband and I have both had calls from this number-both times a male saying they were calling about our computer problems. Knew my husbands name but not mine. Since we placed no calls or requests about this we hung up.
We get calls from this number at odd hours of the day and night. They never leave a message, so we figure it is some sort of telemarketing scheme because telemarketers never leave any information about their call. We NEVER return calls from strange telephone numbers.
Received a call today stating they were with PC Solutions. They are calling because my computer is having issues with windows and he needed access to repair. I told him I didn't know who he was and I wasn't home. He said he would call me back. I said again I don't know who you are. He replied you are using a computer with windows on it. I told him no. I have a Linux system. He said he would call me back. I tried to call the number back but is not a working number?? He was definitely strong accented..Asian possibly.
They keep calling saying I have a virus on my computer. When I demanded they tell me what type of computer I have they claimed it was Windows. I don't own a computer. My phone # is on do not call list & I've told them they are scammers & to stop calling me. They keep persisting. Any time any day they call. Wish they would stop harassing me!!
So, I own an Apple. That's important information for this story. Also, former telemarketer! And worse; Techy. I've heard of and seen this scam in action. . .but the troll in me couldn't resist going down this yellow brick road. So when I got a phone call from "Geek Squad", about my "Windows" computer, I just couldn't resist. To be extra helpful, the man specified he was talking about my Windows *computer*, and not the windows of my home. "Oh! Well, thank goodness you said something, I *am* sitting beside a window!. . .But my Windows computer is right next to it." "Okay," he tells me, "Now. . ." He gives me a long list of instructions to preform a drive by; Drive By's a hacking attempts where they call you, trick you into giving this person access to your system, and hold it hostage until you pay them off. After lying about typing in the IP address, he asks me to read it back to him: Damn! "I'm dyslexic," I explain, which actually is true, "But trust me--I typed it in exactly like you said!" "Read it back to me," he repeats. "May I speak to your supervisor?" I ask. When he wants to know why, I claim I'm having trouble understanding him. He puts me on hold. . .and, after some time passes, the exact same guy picks up and pretends to be the supervisor! He runs through the instructions again. "So just press 'enter'?" I say, finally at the end of his directions. "Yes. You should see a pop up. Do you see a pop up?" "Um. . .no. No, I'm not seeing any pop up." He pauses, then, "REALLY?!" "You know," I say, "It *could* have something to do with the fact I don't *own* a Windows computer. I own an Apple. And I know you're trying to scam me into giving you remote access to my system. So [***] off, and don't call here again!" Believe it or not, he called back. "What proof do you have that we are a scam?!" He demands to know. "Uh, I dunno, dude, the fact that this is a well known scam all over the internet? The fact I don't own a Windows computer and you didn't know that? I own an Apple, so there is no reason, AT ALL, why Microsoft would call me." "So wait--you own an Apple?" "Listen, dude; What you're doing? Is illegal. You're calling me from out of state, meaning I could report you to the FBI--I've reported scammers like you to them before, and I'm damn sure willing to do it again!" I slam down the phone; And my threat is very real--The FBI does indeed investigate these scams if they cross state boundaries. Then, you won't believe it; Dude called back a third time in a row. "Hello Ms. Selena?" he says. My name isn't Selena, but, "Yes? I'm Ms. Selena." "I am calling from Windows/Apple Tech support. We see a hacker in your system--" "Look dude," I drop the pretense, "I told you not to call me back. I'm recording these calls, and when I sue? I can get up to $5,000USD *each*. So thanks for making me $15,000 richer--and I look forward to hearing from you again." That was the last call I got.
Received a call from 860-951-7532 on my cell phone. I said hello a number of times and then a man with what sounded like a Indian Accent said "Hello, ma'm, can you hear me? I am a computer technician." I kept saying hello as if I still couldn't hear him and hung up. Is an obvious scam. I blocked the number.
