I just got this message for the first time on my business phone. I am SO glad I Googled it first without calling back right away. Thank you everyone who posted here about this scam. What I want to know is why doesn't AMEx care enough to track these jerks down and prosecute them?
this number keeps coming up on my work and cell line saying I need to contact them about my American Express account? I do not have an American Express card? Very annoying. They call about ten times a day! Is there a way to make this stop?
I called AmEx customer service today and they told me the number is from the BILLING dept. I told her that is crazy they are calling me bc I have an EXCELLENT payment history with them. She transferred me to BILLING and the man proceeded to ask me information to update my account information (e.g. the first question was, "where do you work?"). I told them I was very irritated with the incessent voice messages to return their call due to "a very urgent matter". What a scare tactic. I told them that unless my credit card is being used by someone else, not to call me about this ever again. It borders on invasion of privacy AND harassment.
Received a call from 336-393-7010 this AM with a voice mail msg to call AMEX at 1-888-819-2135. Checked here first; Now I will not call. While I do have a non-business AMEX card, I am current.
Recorded voice - "AMEX" - "This is not a telemarketing call" - "personal matter" - "call 1-888-819-213-" then cut off. Found this site and checked numbers from -2130 to find these postings at -2135. SCAM. Check your credit report at the free credit report website. Do not give out name and SSN, etc. Report it to AMEX at its website.
got a call from this number and i told them why they are calling? They ask my account number and i said i won't and asked him back would you be confortable if i ask yours? He said if i feel not confortable, just call the number at the back of the card. I told him not to call my number anymore.
I got the same call. Checked this site, and there has been some debate on whether this is really AmEx. I called the AmEx number on the back of my AmEx card. I gave them this 888-819-2135 number the rep checked and it was legitimate. They wanted to update my Home Phone Number.
I called the 800 number on the back of my card. I said I had a call claiming to be AmEx from this 888 number. The rep was able to look up the 888 number, called someone in that department and came back on the line saying they just wanted to update my telephone number. This would explain most of these other people saying they don't have an AmEx card.I can't explain why you would say "This is a well known scam." It IS a valid AmEx number, but there's nothing wrong with calling the number on the back of your card like I did.I am not one of the scammers, because there simply isn't a scam.Another indication it is a valid number is the caller ID showed the "real" phone number that hosts the 800 number. Scammers are seldom polished enough to do this, all the ones I've seen block the caller ID number. The host number is 623-492-6031 and callerID show American Express. Also, I did notice the voice on this number and the back of my card are the same.
It's ok, while what you did was not a good thing. I do have an account with AmEx and they were wanting to update my home phone number.I called number on the back of my card, he talked to that service center came back on the line, told me that's what they needed from me. He gave me my home phone number from their records, I told him that was correct.I have posted here three times now trying to clear up the fear mongering other people are trying to stir up.
I got the same call. It is legit (don't trust me, go to AMEX website, call one of the numbers from there and ask.)If anyone from AMEX is listening - how would I know this numer is NOT fraudulent? May I suggest you give out a reference number and ask for that to be entered on the callback?
