I believe this is the Amex "in house collections Dept". I was late on my bill and received a call from them. I also received an email from them the following day. When I called the number on the back of my Amex to check out the legitimacy of the number that had called, they stated the number was from their collections dept.I don't think it's a scam. I just think they are a division of Amex that you should only hear from if your card is behind. As for why they are calling people without cards, maybe someone who had a card use to have your number at one time and they never updated their records or they just put down a bogus number on their application to avoid calls.. I don't know. But as in any situation, check it for yourself first.
My suspicions about this call are based the fact that they left messages on my work phone which I have only had for about a year and never connected it to my Amex account. I just got a similar call from "Bank or America" on my new work phone and don't have an account there.
DON'T CALL BACK THIS NUMBER, CALL BACK THE REAL AMERICAN EXPRESS IF YOU ARE UNCERTAIN. I received multiple calls that sounded semi-official. I called back the real American Express (get it via their website or if you have a amex card, use that one.) and American Express confirmed that it wasn't them, no matter what the caller id said. If anyone leaves a message with incorrect personal info and want you to call them to give them personal information, don't use the call back number in the message, use the phone number from the company's website.
Bogus call left a message on my machine claiming to be American Express and asked to call this number back.
American Express told me that if someone is calling with wrong personal information don't give them any info. They stated it is possible somehow that accounts got linked, which quite frankly makes me nervous about security of our personal information. They told me I should not be getting any calls from them officially. So when I got several more right after, that meant that in American Express's own words, those calls are fake.
I just called it back, because of the following:- I have both corporate and personal cards- Amex only has my home number but not my work number for my personal card. They DO have both my home and work phone numbers on my corporate card.- I received voicemails at home AND at work at the same time. (8:30pm on a friday at home, and my work phone system emails me voicemail attachments, and i received one a minute later)- I assumed because of the above it was for the corporate card, and because i was running late on last statement, but caught up. I owed zero but still had the red "overdue" warning on the amex online account management site. Closing date is today too.- I figured I'd call back and enter the corporate card digits, definitely not my personal one. I was calling from home, the message simply responded that "the number you are calling from matches your account" and "your account is up to date and no payment is due at this time, you may hang up now".Luckily it was legit but in retrospect it was still a stupid move. I should have just called the number on the back of the card. I'd call back now but it's 10:40pm and who knows which country call center i'll get routed to.Always call the number on the back of the card first!
They have no need to call you, ..Wise up , I suggest if you think it really is Amex, call and give them all you personal Info..Goofs
Replying to myself here, but I did end up just calling the number on the back of the card and had them check the other number that called, and it turned out to be legitimate. The customer service rep said to always call the number on the back of my card first if I don't recognize the number calling.
