Please people! People are able to spoof the phone number that appears on your caller ID. Many have done this to impersonate law enforcement agencies including the IRS. If it is such an urgent manner, chances are the IRS will contact you by USPS. I'm sure they have to get some kind of confirmation that they contacted you about your alleged owed taxes anyway so they will probably send a notice by certified mail as a legal record that they contacted you before they take actions. If they do call they will clearly tell you who they are and why they are calling and will give you further information on how to contact them. If you get one of these calls, don't call the number they give you to call back. Call the IRS directly. If you suspect it's a scam, you can access a link on their website (www.irs.gov) to report fake IRS calls and help the IRS track down scammers.
OK, folks. First, I am a Revenue Officer with the IRS. About a year ago (I think) we changed phone systems and went with a VOIP system. Just because it happened for my office a year ago, doesn't mean others didn't get it before. It was a "rolling" process.Anyway, when I call from my office number, it does show up as (901) 214-2999. Why, I don't know. I personally think it is stupid given that there are so many scams out there. However, it is what it is as they say. Now, of course someone can probably spoof this number & make a call from India or Tin-Buck-Too show on your caller ID as this number. Here is how you know for sure.First, get their badge number. Get them to tell you details that a scammer wouldn't know, i.e. amount of deposits, tax on previous years, employment wages, etc.I have found that 99.9% of the time, the people I contact know there is an issue. So all these people claiming that they are being harassed, don't know what is going on, etc. are probably stretching the truth a little. If you are still not convinced, you can always do nothing. You'll find out soon enough if it was real when you get levied or a lien filed.
As an addendum to the above . . . The real IRS, will never demand that you pay something right then over the phone, put it on a card, etc. If they do, let them know you will pay it through EFTPS (Electronic Funds Tax Payment System) or at the official IRS web site (irs.gov). Both of these would be secure & if the person is insistent, you can always let them know the payment has been made & give them the confirmation number.
I received a call from this number and a detailed message was left for me from an IRS agent. It was a legitimate call because I've had contact from this person before and they are working on an ongoing issue I've been negotiating with the IRS. While the call appears to be from Tennessee, the agent is actually in South Carolina. But it was definitely a real IRS agent who called via this number.
Actually it is legit. I just got a call from an agent at the Irs with whom ive been workinfg
Who gave you a government job when you don't even know how to spell without grammatical errors?!? FYI.. It should be you're NOT your! If you are actually an employee with the IRS then you should not be afraid to let us know your credentials... am I right?!?
This is a legit IRS phone number. Their phone system used in offices nationwide has a central routing system that is in TN. So even though an agent local to your area may be calling you, the number used to ID will be assigned by their phone system.
Do not even confirm or deny incorrect info. If your using credit check sites or id protection they ask you to verify correct info with false info. You're providing pieces to the puzzle. The irs will not call you.
The paranoia here is hilarious. Yes, this IS the IRS! My agent (whom I have worked with before) said that they did just change their phone systems. My agent was calling from my same hometown and the caller ID said Memphis call. This number is legit and if you're getting a call from this number, you probably already know you have an IRS issue (or are in denial).
