I cannot vouch for the validity of all calls but you are correct. I just received a call (I didn't recognize it and allowed it to go to voicemail) and it was from an IRS auditor with whom I have been working on an exam for the last six months. I am a director of tax for a publicly-traded corporation. In this case, the call was legit.
IRS Bugging you? These people can help. www.patriotnetwork.info They helped me through an audit and got my bill reduced. I can't pay the IRS so they ruled me non -collectible.
You are wrong this is the IRS, for example the Taxpayer Advocate from Birmingham, AL called me on this line. It is a general IRS trunk line, it will do you no good to call this particular number back, they will leave you a message or send you a letter.
I just received a call too regarding a client I have a POA on file for. This call was legit.
This is a call from a Tax Advocate Service. They only called me because I called them first. They are not trying to collect a debt, they are here to help - all these other users are paranoid.
This is a legitimate IRS number. This was something related to CWA agreements with the IRS but may not be calling for the same reason to everyone else. Although, don't forget that phone numbers CAN be spoofed (showing a certain number when calling with a different one).
This is a legit #. I'm former IRS and in a particular region they have this as their out going Caller ID. It is not a direct line. I have been spoofed by other numbers Saying the police were coming etc, I was intrigued to know what office they worked in because I also worked for the IRS. Needless to say the person hung up. I reported the number to the FTC.
This was a legitimate call, following an inquiry I'd made with the IRS last week, when having trouble getting the answer to a couple of issues. As it happens, I was able to resolve the issues through the regular IRS phone system (a rather incredible victory, in fact), but this was a cal following up on the message I'd left, while still seeking help. So, yes, this was the Taxpayer Advocate service that is part of the IRS, and is not a scam call (at least, not in my case; of course, it's possible scammers could spoof this number, but that wasn't the case for me). Under "Call Type" here, I put "Non-profit Organization," as that's the closest to what this was, of the choices offered, though it's still not quite right.
