Your wrong, I am an IRS agent and we do call for the initial contact. We do mail a letter as well, but we do call for the initial contact, that being said, we do not ask for your social security number or personal information. If someone claims to be from the IRS and asks you for personal information, it is a scam.
Claims irs. Per my attorney the irs never reaches out via phone. It's always certified mail or post office.
I get phone calls from this Nr.on July 15. The first time I pick up I very broken English voice say what I believe say irs.very fightining for me..if Irs don't the send Mail..I can not think why irs.calls me.so I assume there is something not right.
This phone call came from the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service. The phone call WAS wanted, and I appreciate them calling me. I have a tax issue that needs to be resolved, and they are helping me fix the issue with the IRS. Again, this was a valid incoming phone call, but it is not the outgoing number that I use when I want to contact my advocate. This was a legitimate phone call.
This is a legitimate IRS number. I had a meeting with my local IRS office yesterday. She informed me that because of the phone system they have, when she calls me back, it will show up as this Memphis, TN number and not her local number.
I am a CPA in Texas that works with the IRS regularly. I just received a call from this number and it was an IRS agent that I have been working with on an audit. As others have stated, this is a main IRS outgoing phone call number. It's completely possible that scammers are spoofing this number so when you get the call, it could be the IRS or a scammer. The IRS will never ask for your personal info and they won't threaten you will jail, etc over the phone.Be diligent when answering but know that it could be a legitimate phone call.
This is a scam -- scare tactic phone call from the IRS. They will NEVER call you asking for money, EVER. If they do return a call to you regarding an inquiry you've made or to discuss a case you have with them, the number will show up as PRIVATE CALLER on CID, if it shows up at all.I got six back-to-back-to-back-to-back calls in less than a minute from this number. The IRS will NOT do that. Plus, there was no message left. Again, that shows it's a scam. For the posters above who claim it's legitimate, I'd suggest either they're trolls, or they've been scammed and don't realize it.
I don't know if its the IRS or not. I am leaning towards NOT since I googled this. This number called my office main number, After I answer it the caller ID went to "unknown" and no longer displayed the number that was just there (201-214-2999). The women said she was with the IRS and wanted to fax over a levy for one of my merchants. She provided me with the merchant name, the merchant signers name, and confirmed our mailing address. I gave her my fax number but I won't process a levy just off the fax itself. I will call a number I know to be from the IRS for levies (get them all the time) and verify this form first. The makes me feel this is a scam is that there was screaming child in the background for a bit. Maybe the government has their own "bring your child to work day"?
