From SSN number but recorded. caller said press one to talk to agent. Claimed there was illegal activity on my SSN and my SSN payment would be blocked if I did not respond. SSN does not robo call.
Employee reported receiving a robocall message on her work cell from this number. The scammers spoofed their callerid to match the Social Security Administration's toll phone number that is on their ssa.gov contact page. The robocall (recording) stated they were going to disable your social security account (threat) on suspicion that it was being used by another person (fear). Press one to talk to representative (bait). All red flags of a robocall phishing scam. We all should know that the Social Security Administration would NOT use recorded messages such as this to threaten people of disabling/suspending their social security account out of fear of it being used by other individuals. Beware of governmental impersonation scams such as these that use callerID spoofing programs/app to show up as "Social Security" on your phone's callerID. The SSA is aware of these impersonation scams and have issued the following tips page: https://blog.ssa.gov/is-that-phone-call-from-us/ Also remember that Social Security will never do any of the following: Call you to demand an immediate payment; Demand that you pay a debt without the ability to appeal the amount you owe; Require a specific means of payment, such as requiring you to pay with a prepaid debit card; Ask you for your personal information or credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or Threaten you with arrest or deportation. If you get a robocall such as these, DO NOT Provide them any personal/sensitive information if you do happen to "press one to talk to a representative". Better yet, phish them back and ask them for their name, contact information, address, etc. Ex. "I'm going into a meeting right now, can I get your name and direct phone number or email address so I can call you back and take care of this matter?". Then use whatever information you can get from them to report them for government agency impersonation scam on the SSA, FTC, FBI sites. https://www.ssa.gov/fraudreport/oig/public_fraud_reporting/form.htm
Received a call from this number on my cell phone. I pressed #1 as instructed. The poor English speaking person picked of the call. (you could hear many others in the background.) He asked for my name and SSI#. I would not give him any info until he told me what he was calling about. I told him that Social Security does not call unless I called them first. They mail letters. He said you didn't respond to our letters. I'm not old enough to need SSI yet and did not contact them. He disconnected before answering my questions.
I screen all my calls and never pick up a number or place I do not recognize or am expecting.I received a call from someone named Amelda (poor English speaking) who said the call was for me (my full name) and it was in reference to my Social Security application and I should call her back Fri. or Sat. until 1:30pm. The caller ID listed the caller as General Info & ..... with the number as 1-800-772-1213. But the number she left to call back was 1-800-842-0588 Ext. 34967 - which when Googled also turned up on a list of scam numbers.I have absolutely no application for Social Security, as I already have one so I know this is a scam and will not waste my time calling back to try to see what it is about - Social Security does not call you out of the blue about something important - they send you something official in writing through the US Postal service.
There are SSA offices all over the country that handle several different workloads. It is very possible you can have an office in another state contact you. If you are concerned you can call the national number and verify the person that called you.
