This is a trunk line for the U.S. government. I work for the IRS and just got to my desk and couldn't find my phone so I called it from my desk phone and this is the number that came up. I'm not awake yet and 10 minutes later I saw I had a missed call from this number and then remembered I called my cell from my desk phone and hung up as soon as I found my cell. It's not a scam.
This was a real IRS call. I work in a Tax department at a large company and was skeptical at first. This was a call from an IRS agent who followed their normal course of contacting us first by a letter (which was mishandled) then when we didn't respond she called.
I just answered the call and YES it is very REAL. this was a call I was expecting. The agent told me it was a "dummy" number they use. It was the agent I have been corresponding with and I already had her name and ID. This is not a scam.
I am expecting a call from the IRS mediation at 10 30am but this number has called for two days and I am concerned I won't know if it's real or not . They called at 10 05am and they sent a letter saying they are calling at 10 30am. I would love advice.
Claimed he, the caller (Carlton Black) with the IRS needed to talk to one of our employee's about finalizing an audit. I already knew the IRS does call by phone. The message he left for employee will be placed in trash can.
Well, since I had called IRS and was waiting to hear from them, I can tell you the Auditor called and left a msg from this number.I have worked with her before so am confident it is real.
I didn't answer, thinking it was a robocall or scam. The caller left a message for me by name, and it was in response to a request I submitted to the IRS last week. So at least some of the calls may be legitimate.
This is an actual IRS phone number. These calls are from offices using a VoIP system that is attached to the Memphis Service Center's IT system. Typically, if you do not have you name on your voicemail greeting, they can not leave a message because of disclosure rules. If you speak to someone and question that they are who they say they are, you can tell them that, get their ID number and tell them that you want to call toll free to verify they are who they say they are. If they are real IRS, they are more than willing to do this for you.
