This is a legitimate number used by the Bank of America fraud services department. I was wary when I got the call, but they said they were fine with me hanging up and calling the number on the back of my card and asking to be transferred-- that they could understand my concern. When I called the number on the back of my card the customer service rep verified that this number is the number of their fraud department. They were just alerting me to suspected fraudulent activity on my card which turned out to not actually be fraudulent. If you get a call from this number, you can always hang up and call the main 1-800 number if you are nervous, but know that it is a legit Bank of America number and if you are getting a call from this number, it means that they have detected some potentially suspicious transaction(s) made on your card.
Got a call from 302-731-1166. Missed the call since I sleep late,Called my BoA number on the back of my CC. Yes, it was legit. NOT a scam.I had tried to buy something from China for 59 cents using PayPal, Have BoA cc on file but at last moment decided not to purchase, CC had expired since I use ShopSafe from BoA, ie virtual cc with limited monies, Had to create a new virtual cc but did not go thru since it was too much hassle for a 59 cent purchase,All ended well not a scam,
It's an actual legitimate call from Bank of America's fraud department. They tried reaching me three times before I was able to catch the phone in time, but they have an automated system that was acting up and never put me through to someone, so I hung up and called B of A directly. They confirmed for me that this was indeed the fraud department trying to contact me regarding a suspicious charge to my account. I'm not sure what is leading some of the people here to think it's fraud. But, as many others have said, if you're at all concerned about this number you can contact their customer service directly.
I received an automated call a few minutes ago from (302)731-1166 stating that suspicious charges had been made to my BOA card. I was transferred to the "fraud department." I was asked my mother's maiden name. Then asked question about checking or debit card banking with BOA. I stated "I do not have checking or debit and only thing is a small loan." I asked "if the person would hold while I gathered information from our filing cabinet." When I went back to the phone, there was not an answer. I tried several times to redial the above number and received busy signals. I actually tried to use my BOA card a couple of times this week for online purchases. The card was denied. I thought that strange since I had the card for several months and only activated it 5-6 days ago. I shredded the card after it was denied.
It is Bank of America. I called them and gave them very little personal info and they were able to explain why they called and from the facts they told me everything was accurate.
this number has called me twice so far on a SUNDAYyes i have a BOA card HOWEVER the number they are callingis NOT the number on my accountso i am leary of this numberalso i have gone online and there are no pending charges of any kindthe only charge i have made was one 32 days ago with ShopSafe
I just spoke to BoA and they said the number is legit. I called the number myself and they do just ask for the CC # right of the bat, without identifying who they are. I stated that they could be a scam and they stated to call the 1-800 number on the back of the card. After doing so and getting an operator, they sent me to the fraud department and it is just a case of BoA's over-active card monitoring service. I had made several pre-order purchases from amazon and verizon that hit at the same time, so they thought my card may have been stolen. The same thing happens every Christmas when I make multiple purchases. One of the triggers is that I live near the DE/MD boarder so if they see a purchase at one Walmart in DE followed by another in MD 30 minutes later, the fraud department thinks someone has stolen the card and is riding down the highway on a shopping spree. I think if you actually pick up on the call, you get the automated verification of charges thing. However, during Christmas shopping, my card has been shut down since I didn't respond to the call. This has happened the past two years. It is quite a pain. Overall, I think it is a poor business practice not to identify who you are and the best thing to do is actually call the CC company yourself so you actually know who you are speaking to.
Keep getting calls from this number. Reading these posts I now know who it is. Unless I get a name with a number show up on my cell phone screen which indicates I know the caller, I let the call go to voice mail, where they can leave a massage. 99% of the time, they never leave a message, and so I ignore the call.If it's that important that they contact me, then they would leave a message. It would be nice if there was some way one could block the number.Thank God for voice mail and telephone recorders.
It's an urgent call from Bank of America's credit card fraud department, so answer it! I noted an odd charge of $1.13 from APL MOBILEME on my online account and notified the bank. They were unable to assist me because the charge had not cleared and was only pending. Then, another charge appeared from the same vendor this morning and I received a phone call from the NEWARK number. Unfortunately, my phone line is protected by a TeleZapper, which knocked down the bank's computer generated call. Another suspicious charge from APL MOBILEME came through and the bank locked down the account.Everyone should check their online accounts and see if they can sign up for email alerts for charges made without the card being swiped in an electronic card reader. BOA has this option and was useful in cutting short the fraud on my account.
302-731-1166 called my cell this afternoon; didn't answer not knowing the number. That number simply left a pre-recorded message that there was a merchant security breach and my Bank of America Visa card was being re-issued with a different number.Went online logging into my secure Bank of America account; went to LiveChat and said I'd gotten a call about my Credit Card and they confirmed the recording was genuine as well as the security breach and the re-issue of my card, having sent a letter to me saying such and the new card would be here today or shortly.Re-checked my online BoA acc't and Credit Card website after the call to BoA and my CC had been deleted from the genuine BoA online account.I then called the Bank of America Credit Card 800-732-9194 who confirmed above as standard procedures. What no one seems to write--the Credit Card is NOT issued by Bank of America.....It's issued at the Bank of America branch office and mine is an HSBC (bank) credit card under the BoA logo... nowhere on my credit card does it say HSBC bank, but that's who issued the card with the BoA name/logo on it--all per my BoA Branch Manager.Hence, might be the reason there are not only Visa, but Mastercard, American Express and other brand names asked about because they may be issued by HSBC.In any case, 302-731-1166 for me is a genuine phone number... so those of you who have had poor experiences might have crooks who are spoofing 302-731-1166 on Caller ID when they call you--(Google "Caller ID spoof") to see how easy it is to do.As the more intelligent and thoughtful people here have posted, they didn't give out any personal info and were most careful in their discussions with the stranger on the other end of that line AND verified with their bank and/or BoA.So tis possible those crying fraud were victims of crooks via spoofing Caller ID just as rightly as are those of us who genuinely received fraud alert calls from 302-731-1166--like me.Both can be right! And, Thank You some of you.... I enjoyed a great deal of amusement at the childishness, churlishness and pompousness of some of the more obtuse posters.... you folks are a real gaggle.....
